Brother recalls musical genius and
Jewish heart of Leonard Bernstein.

Orchestra is about to per-
form the Broadway show
tunes of Leonard Bernstein and
Stephen Sondheim, a book about
Bernstein is heading to the stores.
Leonard Bernstein: American
Original (Collins; $29.95), which
includes references to Sondheim,
gives the back stories to many of the
pieces that will be performed Sunday
evening, Aug. 3, at the Meadow Brook
Music Festival.
Elizabeth Schulze, music director of
the Maryland Symphony Orchestra,
will conduct. New York stage vocalists
Debbie Gravitte, Doug LaBrecque and
Christiane Noll, joined by the Detroit
Concert Choir directed by Gordon
Nelson, will perform selections from
West Side Story, Candide, Follies,
Company, Gypsy and other shows
appropriate for "A Salute to Bernstein
and Sondheim."
"As a member of one of the last
Tanglewood Music Institute fellow-
ship conducting classes to study with
Leonard Bernstein, I remember, first

take every aspect of a composition
seriously," says Schulze, encouraged by
the man known for opening orchestral
doors to women and minorities.
"Not one detail should go unnoticed
or pass without serious consideration
in our preparation for performance.
Certainly nothing got past him!
Bernstein never forgot a face and
rarely forgot a name, and he could size
you up in a glance.
"It is an honor and a pleasure to
perform Bernstein's music, along with
the music of his West Side Story col-
laborator Stephen Sondheim, both
masters of sizing up the human condi-
tion and presenting it to us in all its
glitter and shadow."
Burton Bernstein, co author
of the new book with New York
Philharmonic archivist and historian
Barbara Haws, happily recalls his older
brother's professional successes and
the family-centered personality that
kept the two men close to their parents
and late sister.
One picture in Burton Bernstein's
home validates the comment made by
Schulze. It includes the Bernstein sib-
lings and famed violinist Isaac Stern.
