Going Batty

Christian Bale, who plays Batman
in the current box-office bonanza
The Dark Knight, was arrested
41, last week when his mother told
Iti ) police that Bale had assaulted
her and his sister. The actor says
it isn't true. True or not, there's
a sad irony even in the allegation
of abuse. Bale's former step-
mother is feminist pioneer Gloria
Steinem, 74. She wed the actor's
father in 2000
and became
his widow in
2003. Steinem,
who was raised
in no faith, is
the daughter of
a Jewish father
and a Protestant
Gloria Steinem
mother. Defining
herself as "a foul
weather Jew," Steinem says she
feels most Jewish, and highlights
her Jewish side, when Jews are
under attack.
On a more upbeat note, the
phenomenal success of the new
Batman flick should mean a big
marketing push for The Unborn, a
Jewish themed horror movie with
echoes of The Exorcist that will
be released in 2009. The writer-
director is Michigan native David
S. Goyer, who also co-wrote The
Dark Knight and the 2005 hit film

Batman Begins.

The July 21 issue of Newsweek
had an article about Sen. Barack
Obama's path to becoming a reli-
gious Christian.
One passage dis-
cusses Obama's
friendship with a
Jewish member
of the Illinois
Legislature:
"In 1999, while
still in the Illinois
Ira Silverstein
State Senate,
[Obama] shared an office suite
with Ira Silverstein, an Orthodox
Jew. Obama peppered Silverstein
with questions about Orthodox
restrictions on daily life: the
kosher laws and the sanctions
against certain kinds of behavior

on the Sabbath. 'On the Sabbath,
if I ever needed anything, Barack
would always offer,' remembers
Silverstein. 'Some of the doors
are electric, so he would offer
to open them ... I didn't expect
that."'

Premieres

Opening Wednesday, Aug 6,
is Pineapple Express, a film
described as a "straight-up"
stoner comedy. (The title refers
to a type of marijuana.) Express
is another comic film out of the
Judd Apatow production stable
and stars Apatow film regular
Seth Rogen, 26, as a Jewish
slacker/stoner and James Franco
(Spider-Man), 30, as his Jewish
pot dealer/buddy.
One reviewer notes that Rogen
plays a character that Albert
Brooks perfected: a "doughy"
Jewish guy who's smarter than
everyone around him and makes
really funny remarks about every-
body's stupidity, but despite his
smarts, still manages to land in
hot water.
Project Runway began its
new season on Bravo on July
16. Hosted by famous designer
Michael Kors, 49, it pits aspiring
fashion designers in a 13-week
competition. Don't worry if you
missed the first three episodes.
Bravo has a very extensive rerun
schedule and you can easily
catch a repeat showing; check
the Bravo Web site. New episodes
first air Wednesdays at 9 p.m.
The second episode featured
Natalie Portman as the guest
judge. The third
episode had
comedian/actress
