Since iodine was added to table
salt in the 1920s, lack of iodine
in the American diet has become
less of an issue. Iodine deficiency,
however, can be related to the
environment and can also result
in a decrease in thyroid
hormone production. The
ability to adjust to less
'-',,-/
iodine decreases with age.

Seaweed, saltwater sea-
food, and plants in coastal areas
once covered by the sea are excel-
lent sources of iodine. Adequate
dietary selenium also promotes a
healthy thyroid.
Iodine also plays a role in:
regulating growth/metabolic rate,
burning fat, supporting mental
processes, and promoting healthy
hair, skin, nails and teeth. I hope
this helps answer your question

A more common cause
of a goiter today is an
increase in thyroid

(TSH), which can oc-
cur in response to a de-
fect in thyroid hormone
synthesis.
