Focus On Funding Jonathan Westin, assistant director for Legislative Affairs, United Jewish Communities (UJC), will discuss "Advocacy in Action: Maximizing Public Funding for our Jewish Community," at a Conversations with Legislators and Civic Leaders lunch briefing sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council at noon Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Max M. Fisher Federation Building in Bloomfield Township. Westin's areas of expertise include legislative strategy and advocacy related to health care delivery, long- term care and aging — including such key programs such as Medicaid and Medicare which fund much of the care delivered by Jewish communal provid- ers. Kid Fit At Gan Shalom Can Shalom KinderFirst Ready will host its first Kid Fit program each Wednesday beginning in the fall at Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park. The program is designed for the older preschoolers and early fives. The instructor, Michelle Black of Oak Park, fitness expert, designed the class to help children develop gross motor skills and social skills. They will develop their minds and bodies while being engaged in non- competitive athletics. This program is part of the new KinderFirst Ready at Congregation Beth Shalom, which teaches funda- mental of exercise through a fun and challenging workout that includes circuit training, exercise games and stretching. Susan Gartenberg of Bloomfield Hills is the director of Gan Shalom Parenting Center. The KinderFirst Ready class will be taught by Ashley Shindler of Oak Park. She obtained her degree in early childhood education from Madonna University in Livonia. There will be a get together for all the Gan children at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at the Gan Shalom playground. Israel will be among the countries represented.
