AIDS Preventive
Doctors from the Jerusalem AIDS Project and Hadassah Hospital in
Jerusalem have made three trips to Africa in the last year to teach
medical personnel how to do adult and infant circumcisions.
A story two weeks ago in the Chicago Tribune cited World Health
Organization studies conducted in Kenya, South Africa and Uganda
from 2004-06. They found a 50-60 percent lower risk among men who
were circumcised for contracting AIDS from heterosexual sex.
Israel is drawing on its experience during the 1980s and 1990s,
when 1 million Jews from the former Soviet Union immigrated. Israeli
doctors performed 1,000 adult circumcisions per month during that
period.
Three delegations of Israeli surgeons taught the procedure in
Swaziland. It has the highest prevalence of AIDS in the world
— 260,000 cases in a population of 1 million. The Israelis included an
Israeli Arab doctor with experience in Muslim ritual circumcision.

Seeking Historical Correspondence
The Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People, based at
Hebrew University in Jerusalem, is a remarkable resource for data
and historical information about our Jewish towns and ancestors.
Hadassah Assouline, director of the Central Archives, is trying to col-
lect personal or family correspondence written from Eastern Europe
to relatives in the United States, Israel or elsewhere.
These are important sources for historical research, especially for
the years preceding the outbreak of World War II, but also for other
periods. Many people holding such letters are sentimental about
them, but unaware of their historical significance.
The Central Archives is very interested in collecting such mate-
rial, either originals or photocopies. Materials can be sent directly to
the archives, in care of Hadassah Assouline: Central Archives for the
History of the Jewish People, Hi-Tech Village 3/4, Giv'at Ram Campus,

Hairy Experience
Most kids who grow their hair for
donation are girls doing it for a
bat mitzvah project. Not Zachary

Zachary, who will enter fifth grade at Forest Elementary in
Farmington Hills loves doing tzedakah. He volunteers at the Gleaners
Food Bank each Thanksgiving, for example. He attends Temple Israel
religious school, plays sports and is a Cub Scout. He also has fun
hanging out with friends and his older brother, Noah. His parents are
Sheryl and Andrew Collen.
