ooking closely at outdoor
surroundings — waterways,
gardens, train tracks — has
provided Ruth Adler Schnee with
artistic inspiration she's translated into
modernistic textile designs for a career
that continues into her 85th year.
Schnee, who works out of her
Southfield home, will have her projects
exhibited at the Birmingham Bloomfield
Art Center with "Show the Colors:
A Life in Design!' The retrospective,
running July 25-Aug. 29 is part of the
series Michigan Masters and advances
a March exhibit at the Longboat Key
Center for the Arts in Florida.
"I will be showing 43 panels of uphol-
stery, reissued and current designs that
can be purchased today',' says Schnee,
whose original drawings are being
acquired by the Henry Ford Museum.
"There also will be pictures of fabrics
used as upholstery and text panels to
explain my work!"
Schnee, who describes herself as a
minimalist paying close attention to
color, was invited to do this exhibit by a
friend's granddaughter active with the
BBAC. The local artist often is invited to
lecture at colleges and before organiza-
tions.
"It's a great thrill for me to see the
attention to my designs:' says Schnee,
who holds a bachelor's degree in fine
arts from the Rhode Island School of
Design and a master's degree in archi-
tectural design from the Cranbrook
Academy of Art.
Schnee, whose family left Germany in
1939 to escape the Nazis, got some early
training from her mother, artist Marie
Adler, and a family friend, the renowned
painter Paul Klee.
"At the time I graduated from
Cranbrook, architectural offices were
