Ntt our Larry Moss in his 1932 Ford hot rod Car Connoisseur Suzanne Chessler Special to the Jewish News W hen top-of-the-line antique and collector cars come together at this year's Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance, onlookers can thank Larry Moss and his volunteer Car Selection Committee for the choices. Moss, a collector active with the Concours for more than a decade, takes pride in finding what he terms "the best of the best" vehicles to show- case at the annual event, now in its 30th year. The Concours runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, on the grounds of Oakland University in Rochester, where the mix includes General Motors' design triumphs to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the corpo- ration as well as Ferraris, Bentleys, Grand Prix racers and even a vehicle that be driven and flown. "The diversity of cars we'll have this time is unlike anything we've ever had:' says Moss, 57, who has served as chairman of the entire Concours. "We'll have 230 cars in the show and 300 on the grounds." Moss, who lives in West Bloomfield and works in wealth management for Raymond James Associates, has been a car hobbyist since his youth, notic- ing vehicles along his Oak Park news- paper route. While he drives a Chrysler 300 Hemi, he owns a 1947 Cadillac, a 1960 Jaguar and a 1932 Ford among other vehicles. The car selection chairman, a mem- ber of the Michigan Region Classic Car Club of America, attends many auto shows around the country, gets to know the owners and contacts the people with cars he believes would make the Concours exciting. "Besides being able to see the great- est cars in the world gathered in one WV, PAsiv.,94A, cavOeiov place, people can participate in a number of fun events, including some being offered for the first time this year:' says Moss, who shares his special interest with his wife, Patty, who also joins him in membership at Temple Israel and Tam-O-Shanter Country Club, both in West Bloomfield. The events, with some additional costs, get off the ground on Thursday evening, July 31, with the second annual Hangar Party at the Oakland Airport. The Saab Performance Drive Team, a three-man squad, will per- form complex synchronized maneu- vers. Friday's events include the Meadow Brook Concours Motoring Tour and the Art Reception and Art Auction. Saturday's specials feature historic races at the Waterford Hills Raceway as well as the RM Classic Car Auction and cooking and wine seminars on the Meadow Brook grounds. While devoted driving fans can attend Ferrari seminars, everyone can try unique foods served by gourmet vendors and find special items at shops showing private label collec- tions. Dream Car Garage, on the SPEED channel, will be filming on Sunday for broadcast in 2009. "Because these are collector cars, this is not a green event:' Moss says. "These are very high-priced, distinc- tive vehicles." ❑ The Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, on the grounds of Oakland University in Rochester. $25 adults, free for children 12 and younger.
