oung Israel of Oak Park, a
modern Orthodox syna-
gogue, announced that Rabbi
Michael Cohen assumed pulpit duties
beginning July 15.
Rabbi Cohen replaces outgoing
Rabbi Reuven Spolter, who, with his
family, moving to Israel earlier this
month.
Formerly of
Congregation Keter
Torah in West
Bloomfield, Cohen
and his wife, Devora,
previously served
congregations in
Alberta and Atlanta
Rabbi Cohen
before moving to
Detroit in 1993.
Cohen is a
graduate of both the Mir Yeshiva and
Yeshivat Nishmat Yisrael Bayit Ve Gan
in Jerusalem. He received his smichah
(ordination certificate) from both the
chief rabbi of Jerusalem and the Av
Beth Din, Jerusalem in 1993.
Cohen, a native of London, and his
wife have four children.
Devora Cohen was born and raised
in Jerusalem. She works as a secretary
at Yeshiva Beth Yehuda in Oak Park.
Cohen initiated several programs
to increase the level of Torah knowl-
edge while at Keter Torah, including
weekly classes in Gemorah, Halachah,
Navi and Chumash. He brought in a
diverse range of lecturers, planned
Shabbatonim and educational semi-
nars.
"I am excited about the change for
both the shul as well as the neighbor-
hood:' said Gil Stebbins, YIOP's presi-
dent.
"Rabbi Cohen's leadership experi-
ence, knowledge of Torah and friendly
disposition will be much appreciated
by our members and the wider corn-
munity."
Cohen was voted in by a majority of
the shul's members this past May after
an in-depth vetting process where
several national candidates applied for
the position.
With 200 member families, YIOP is
the largest Orthodox congregation in
Michigan.

Torah at Congregation Beth Shalom
in Oak Park on Saturday, July 26, to
mark the 50th anni-
versary of his bar
mitzvah.
Weiss is execu-
tive director of Beth
Shalom and has been
with the synagogue
since 2000.
He provides

Center and the Center for Jewish
Living as well as managing the day-
to-day operational activities of the
synagogue.
