A

nswer: Dear Frank, stress
generally comes in two
forms: acute (i.e., event-
driven) stress and chronic stress
(which can result from long-term
exposure to acute stress). Typical
sources of stress are those nag-
ging and sometimes unrelenting
work, social, and financial
difficulties that Americans
face every day.
•
Stress can lead to un-
healthy nutrition-related
behaviors. For example,
adrenaline and cortisol,
the "fight or flight"
hormones released dur-
ing times of stress, can
increase cravings for
food high in fat, sugar,
and salt. Other stress-re-
lated eating behaviors are:
skipping meals, mindless snack-
ing, bad food choices, crash diets,
etc., which can lead to, among
other things, blood sugar imbal-
ances, lowered immunity, and
(closing the circle) more stress.

i

What to do? Take the stress in
your life seriously—if necessary,
seek professional help. Avoid
stress whenever possible. Recog-
nize the link between stress and
unhealthy behaviors. Exercise
regularly. Stay away from fast,
processed, and high-sugar foods.
Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables
and lean protein. Enjoy life.
