T
he Jewish Community Center
of Washtenaw County hosted
a gala honoring Sharon
and Chuck Newman for their vision,
leadership and courage as founders
of the JCC. Funds raised — $300,000
in five-year pledges and $860,000 in
bequests — helped launch the Fund
for the Future, an endowment fund for
the JCC.
More than 400 guests from New
York to California convened to enjoy
good food and drink, but most impor-
tantly, to toast the Newmans' many
accomplishments and gifts to the
community
"It was inspirational to witness
such a huge crowd come together to
pay tribute to Sharon and Chuck and
support the JCC:' said Leslie Bash,
JCC executive director. "It showed the
strength of this community and also
the incredible dedication of its mem-
bers?'
Speakers Larry Smith (first JCC
president), Allan Newman (Chuck's
brother), Michael Newman (Chuck
and Sharon's son) and Alan Muskovitz
(Sharon's brother) lauded the couple
with heartfelt toasts — and hilarious
roasts. Guests also were entertained by
a musical tribute from Neil Alexander
and Jerry Lax.
Twenty-plus years ago, the
Newmans had a vision. While on a
mission to Israel, they heard about a
small community that had a Jewish
Community Center.
They thought, "Why not here in Ann
Arbor?"
Together they generated an enor-
mous amount of excitement and
energy. And they personally took a
financial risk to make it happen. They
rented a building and the JCC was
born. When an elementary school
became available to buy, once again
the Newmans seized the opportunity
and the fledgling Jewish Community
Center bought the school.
Chuck served as JCC president while
Sharon served many terms on the
board of directors.
The JCC is only one part of their
multi-faceted generosity. Chuck
and Sharon also were among the
founding members of Temple Beth
Emeth. Recently, Chuck co-founded
