THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

Watch That Kabob!

Take a gander at the grilling at Cafe Kabob's open-style kitchen.

T

here are two unique styles that
seem to set it off from others
even though such restaurants
may serve much of the same fare ... Cafe
Kabob on Evergreen between 10 and 11
Mile, City Center Plaza, Southfield, is more
than just another Mediterranean restau-
rant.
At lunchtime, even the regular dine-in
service is different ... Folks put in their
order, are able to watch the food being
prepared through a glass-partitioned open
kitchen and get the selection at another
sector near the end ... At dinner, orders
are handled in the same manner but
brought to your table.
There is a carryout window, too, with
folks calling and asked their make of car
and its color ... On arrival, it is seen on a
mounted monitor and the food is given to
people through an open window ... Also
available is an inside pickup area for those
calling ahead.
Cafe Kabob is owned by Executive Chef
Ouse Guilli, whose family owns the Mr.
Kabob located within a gas station at 12
Mile and Coolidge, Berkley.
It is a seven-day operation, Monday-
Friday, 10-8, Saturday; 11-8; Sunday, 11-7
... Seating indoors is 55 and outdoor seat-
ing number 25.
Plus the unusual presentation for con-
sumption at Cafe Kabob, it has become
much noted for its very clean premises
and operation ... On the site are two
granite sinks with copper handles where
customers can wash with soap and water
without visiting a restroom.
Nothing beats cleanliness in a res-
taurant ... Along with its different •
approaches Cafe Kabob seems to give this
tremendous asset the prime importance it
certainly deserves, in a restaurant opera-
tion that puts much emphasis on fresh

and freshly-made.
PATIO DINING has come to
Ginopolis' on the Grill, 12 Mile
and Middlebelt, Farmington
Hills ... A new addition seat-
ing 40 and facing 12 Mile, is
receiving much applause for its
service seven days a week ...
Lunch and dinner, Monday-
Thursday, 11-10; Friday and
Saturday, 11-11, and Sunday
dinner, 2-9 ... Patio entertain-
ment by a gent who plays a lot of music,
Motown, top 40s, oldies, pops, etc., strum-
ming a guitar and singing accompanied by
a rhythmic synthesizer.
GOOD WAITRESS DEPT. ... Yan
Yu at Golden Phoenix, Sugar Tree Plaza,
Orchard Lake Road, north of 15 Mile, West
Bloomfield ... The waitress at former Hoa
Kow of West Bloomfield, is noted for her
expertise with Chinese dishes and Golden
Phoenix's heavily ordered high-quality
veal cutlets and large-sized whitefish ...
Yan Yu's smiling approach and quick effi-
ciency are notable assets.
MINI READER REVIEW ... "We
recently went to J. Baldwin's on 18
Mile and Garfield in Clinton Township.
Everything was excellent, from our wait-
ress, Holly, to the fabulous food. The
owner, Jeff Baldwin, was chef at the Van
Dyke Place and the Whitney [also Mac &
Ray's]. The clam chowder was A-1, and it
also has a wonderful three-soup sampler.
The starters were delicious. We especially
loved the crispy portabella fries, which
were meaty portabella mushroom slices
in a crispy crust with a tangy horseradish
sauce. The salads were also great.
He makes his own breads and is known
for the pizza, deep dish or thin crust. The
main courses ran from seared sea scal-
lops with mushroom risotto, to crab cakes,

chicken Oscar, apple bourbon
chicken, steaks and several
veal dishes. The desserts
were terrific with Bananas
Foster, bread pudding to
chocolate raviolis and his
homemade double chocolate
Bumpy Cake with chocolate
ganache, which is the sig-
nature dessert:' ... Beverly
Feldheim.
FIRST TIME FOR break-
fast served at Pi Restaurant & Lounge,

Southfield, begins Monday, July 21,
Monday-Friday, 7-11, Sunday 8-11 ...

side dishes plus specialties like breakfast
burrito, breakfast pizza, stuffed pancakes,
etc.
WONDERING DEPT. ... What is
going on, if anything, with the previously
announced plans for re-opening of the
former Too Chez locale on Novi Road
under another name by Epoch Restaurant
Group?
NAME CHANGE has been made to the
former Giorgio's on Greenfield, Oak Park
... It is now called Eddie's.
THE WEIRD AND wacky things at
Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum,
Orchard Lake Road, south of 14 Mile,
Farmington Hills, will be featured
Thursday, July 24, 8 p.m., on cable TV's
History Channel ... Owner Marvin Yagoda
and son Jeremy will also be interviewed
on the program's 7 to 8 minute "Coin
Operated" segment.
THE DATE OF Variety, the Children's
Charity's Lights Camera, Auction at the
Imagine Theatre in Novi, will be Tuesday,
October 28.
