related to the April fire at Hechtman
H Apartments. The merger of JAS
and Jewish Home & Aging Services
is expected to be completed by
December.

The Schools
• Yeshivat Akiva enrollment is
expected to increase from 309 last
year to 313 this year because of a new
program for 2-year-olds. Tuition is
$7,040-$10,975, a 7.5 percent increase.
• Hillel Day School's enrollment for
2007-08 was 578, compared to 592
in 2006-07. Tuition is increasing 6.5
percent for 2008-09, from $13,840 to
$14,740. This year, Hillel provided $2.1
million in scholarship support, with
the average grant exceeding $9,000.
• The Frankel Jewish Academy had
225 students enrolled in 2007-08,
compared to 212 in 2006-07. Tuition
will increase 6 percent, from $16,300
to $17,700.
• Yeshiva Beth Yehudah had 701
students enrolled. Tuition will increase
3.5 percent, in a range from $5,500 to
$8,600. The school projects deficits of
$226,000 for 2007-08 and $258,000 for
2008-09. It provides scholarship assis-
tance for 80 percent of its students and
17 of its families had the main wage-
earner lose his job last year.

students last year. Tuition will go up
2 percent, and ranges from $5,000 to
$7,075. Its teachers, according to the
Federation report, are the lowest paid

plan and they receive a token amount
for catastrophic health insurance. The
school projects a small surplus for
2007-08, which will be used to offset

previous deficits.
• Yeshiva Gedolah had 87 students
last year; 79 were from families in the
Detroit area. It expects enrollment
of 83 this year. Tuition will increase
2 percent, from $7,700 to $8,000. A
$41,000 projected surplus for 2007-08
will be used to reduce debt.
