First and foremost, Mitchell has the right
combination of educational background and
personal and professional experience to make a
fine clerk. Mitchell is the clear choice for clerk.

No Cheese With Chicken
I'm concerned that the wrong message
is being sent to some readers. My spe-
cific concern regards a recipe on the
Food page in the July 3 issue ("Perfect
Salads," A33). The recipe includes
chicken and cheese.
The title of the newspaper is still
the Detroit Jewish News and you still
espouse Jewish identity. However, to
include a blatantly non-kosher recipe,
or even one that cannot be made
kosher by substitution, is (in my opin-
ion) wrong and can give readers the
idea that "anything goes" within the
scope of Judaism.
I hope you will reconsider the types
of recipes you include in the future.
People learn from reading publications
such as yours and it would be a shame
to teach that there's no reason not to
separate meat from milk.

Don't Forget JWV
Hats off to the IN for the wonderful
feature "Call To Duty" (July 3, A20)
recognizing local Jews serving in our
armed forces. Members of Jewish
communities throughout the United
States should be proud of the long his-
tory of service Jews have always given
to our country through our military
branches.
I do note in the concluding sec-
tion, "Supporting Our Jewish Troops:'
a supporting organization's name is
missing! The Jewish War Veterans
(JWV) is the oldest of all veterans'
organizations. Since 1896, JWV has

been providing supporting programs
to not only veterans, but to those on
active duty.
JWV's many departments actively
promote veterans' benefits in
Congress. Their success was evident
recently with the passage of the New
GI Bill, signed into law by President
Bush on June 30. In addition, JWV's
outstanding "SOS Program: Support
our Soldiers" sends packages of
essential supplies, including kosher
food items, to Jewish soldiers serving
around the globe.
A visit to JWV's Web site will show-
case the vast array of services that
JWV provides. There is no charge for
JWV membership to those service
men and women who are on active
duty. For further information on
Jewish War Veterans, contact State
Commander Gerald Order at Glorder@
comcast.net and visit the JWV Web
site: www.jwv.org.
