Community Kudos For The JN National and local press associations cite excellence. T he Detroit Jewish News was honored recently by two journalism organizations for excel- lence in writing, photography and design. IN Editor Robert A. Sklar noted, "The range of the awards reinforces the depth and breadth of not only our news coverage, but also our design team in terms of page layout and photography" Last month, the Washington, D.C.-based American Jewish Press Association awarded the JN second prize for Excellence in Overall Graphic Design among North American Jewish newspapers of similar circulation size. Creative Director Deborah Schultz and Senior Graphic Designer Lindsay Schwartz lead the JN Creative Services department. IN photographer Armando Rios also won a second place prize — for his June 2007 Platinum magazine cover photo of an intensely focused barber. The Jewish News also received eight awards from the Detroit Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), in which Michigan newspapers of similar circulation sizes vied for honors. Longtime IN columnist Danny Raskin received a special award from Detroit SPJ President Steve Raphael. The SPJ noted: "For 66 years — as long as the Detroit Jewish News has been publishing — columnist Danny Raskin hasn't missed a single week. His mixture of restaurant news and social gossip has informed and entertained generations of readers?' Two journalists from the IN each won two awards. George Cantor won first prize for editorial writing and third place for his "Reality Check" column. Senior Copy Editor David Sachs won two awards for headline writ- ing — a first-place prize and an honorable mention. In the investigative reporting category, the IN won two kudos. Story Development Editor Keri Guten Cohen won second place for her coverage of Israel. Senior Writer Shelli Liebman Dorfman and Editor Robert Sklar shared third-place honors for their report on "Partners in Torah," an adult education program at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in Southfield. Columnist Robin Schwartz was awarded an honor- able mention in feature writing for "Another Heartfelt Gift:' the story of about Erik Morganroth, a young father of two who received a second heart transplant. "We take pride in the recognition from our peers:' said JN Editor Sklar. "It validates the work that we do and the effort we put in on behalf of the Detroit Jewish community." ❑ Danny Raskin George Cantor David Sachs Keri Guten Cohen Shelli Liebman Dorfman Robert Sklar Robin Schwartz Deborah Schultz Armando Rios Safe, Effective Weight-Loss For Your Teen Have you ever imagined a better life for your overweight teen?
