Peterman's campaign positions, including her publicized endorsement from Right to Life. He called Right to Life's positions on abortion and gay marriage "religiously and politically extreme!' "The signs are strictly a response to her positions as a candidate Plas told the JN. "I do intend to draw attention to those positions; the signs are a good beginning." As a Libertarian, Plas said he favors "keeping government limited and allowing citizens to have as much per- sonal freedom as possible." A former Republican precinct delegate, he hopes to attract enough Republican support to win election. Peterman urged a campaign built around the many pressing issues fac- ing Michigan, not personal attacks. David Other Jewish Wolkinson candidates seeking the 39th district seat are Republicans David Wolkinson and Caryn Devaney and Democrat Lisa Brown. Non- Jewish candidates are Republican Caryn Donald Elliot Jr. Devaney and Democrat John Kuriakuz, in addition to Plas. The primary election is Aug. 5. Devaney told the IN she did not interpret the contro- versial signs to be a product of anti- Lisa Brown Semitism, but rather one Libertarian's response to Peterman's Right to Life endorsement. Brown, meanwhile, said: "Any kind of anti-Semitism is unacceptable. She is not the only Jewish candidate in this race. I haven't experienced any anti-Semitism and I've knocked doors in our community, talking to our resi- dents, for months now." Though Brown's comment is more general, Wolkinson homed in on Peterman's specific claim. "As an observant Jew who has long been active in the pro-Israel Zionist movement and as one who has per- sonally witnessed and been the object of anti-Semitic attacks, I am very sensitive to any accusation of anti- Semitism," Wolkinson said. "However, it is hard to understand how these signs, deplorable as they may be, are anti-Semitic in intent or effect." Wolkinson told the JN that he abhors personal attacks. "One of the reasons why I decided to run was to try and bring a different, cleaner, cam- paign model to the 39th house dis- trict," he said. "Too often, our political battles have become personal; there is no good reason for this!" Citing the state's high unemploy- ment rate, Wolkinson said, "We all need to start thinking and working toward solving Michigan's prob- lems!' ❑ 'High-Class' Rummage Congregation Beth Ahm Sisterhood will hold its annual sale of clean and selective clothing, housewares, elec- tronics and many more items Sunday- Tuesday, Aug . 3-5.
