This Month n 1948

The following news notes originally appeared
in the Detroit Jewish News on July 4, 1948.
Statehood came to Israel in May 1948.

World Events Affect Israel

Moscow — The Soviet Union has officially
recognized the newly created State of Israel
— but the new government has never
received official notification of the action.
Therefore, the government has not yet des-
ignated a diplomatic representative to the
Kremlin.

Jerusalem —Israeli Labor Minister
Mordechai Bentov announced a new man-
power control act, effective immediately,
under which all men over military age, but
less than 55 years old will be called up for
labor in essential services in agriculture and
industry. Women up to 50 will be liable to
the labor draft.

London — A sharp "yes" was Foreign
Secretary Bevin's reply to a question in
Commons whether a British military mis-
sion in Saudi Arabia was still training Saudi

Arabian troops in view of recent proclama-
tion by the Arab League that the latter were
now fighting inside Palestine.
Replying to another question, Bevin
denied that the Foreign Office was respon-
sible for the broadcast of a Cyprus radio sta-
tion, which beams its program at the Arab
countries in Arabic. He denied that the radio
station was under British control. There was
scattered laughter in the house when he
made his denial. He was asked specifically
whether he was aware that the radio station
in Cyrpus "run by the Foreign Office has
encouraged Arabs to invade Palestine and
incited them to occupy Haifa on May 28'.' He
said that he had seen reports on broadcasts
regarding possible Arab military activities,
but this "Arabic broadcasting station" was
not under British control.

Washington — The United States has noti-
fied Egypt and Syria that their replies to U.S.
protests against a maritime blockade pro-
claimed by the two Arab governments over
Palestine coastal waters are unsatisfactory
and will proceed accordingly.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
Proponents of the Palestinian cause are
saying that both major U.S. presiden-
tial candidates' recent statements that
they favor Israel retaining control of an
undivided Jerusalem are unhelpful to
the peace process.

The Answer
For 18 years, 1949-67, Jerusalem was
a divided city because the Jordanians
who controlled its eastern half rejected
peace. They also prohibited Jews from
praying there and destroyed syna-
gogues and Jewish cemeteries. Israel
and its friends worldwide are commit-
ted to never return to that situation
again.
