A Wonderful Network I was not aware of the wonderful services you have for the Jewish community of Detroit. Foremost is the Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network. I am a native of Detroit who made aliyah many years ago. I left my family behind and came to visit them every year. When my mother began her decline, my visits became more frequent until we reached a stage where we needed help and guidance. That is how we met the Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network. It deserves to be recognized for the wonderful service, help and guidance provided to the community. My mother, Sara Kravitz, died at peace and was aided by two very dedicated and amazing people: Rabbi Avie Shapiro and Nathan Shiovitz. Rabbi Shapiro, besides being a warm and caring person who always has time and patience to listen and be attentive to others, helped me personally to face my mother's death with prayer and comfort. His job is to be the accompanying rabbi, which he does superbly. But his personal warmth and caring are something extra beyond his job requirements. He is always there for you, no matter when you need him. Nathan Shiovitz has the most exquisite soul of anyone I have ever met. He overcomes his own difficulties just to be there and give comfort. He is giving and loving and accompanies the fami- lies in pain who have to face their final goodbye for their loved ones. His emotional and loving support cannot be measured. What a fine human being! With people like these, the Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network staff should be rated in excellence. I am so happy their service exists. Their kindness already places them in Olam Haba (Heaven). So may they all have wonderful things happen to them in this life. Respectfully, cave- ats are necessary to accurately represent my position. •Downtown. I support downtown development, but only if retailers sign written agreements to lease or purchase property for a minimum of three years. People need human interaction, which a downtown provides. However, present economic realities must be taken into consideration. • Bike Path. I support a bike path, but only if the matter is put to another vote. Costs were significantly understated in the initial vote. • Roads. I support funds being directed to the repair of Orchard Lake Road before additional roundabouts are con- structed. •Appropriate Decorum. Appropriate respect for citizens and other elected officials is essential to proper governance of our community. Citizens need to feel comfortable presenting their concerns to the township board, without fear of intimidation. Proper, respectful treatment of others is always a necessity. Scott J. Winnick, candidate West Bloomfield Township trustee West Bloomfield Clarification Laurel Stuart-Fink of West Bloomfield, whose letter "Pipes' Bias" ran on June 28 (A8), said, "I believe that a fairminded reading of my previous letter makes it quite clear I am was not endorsing Senator Barack Obama, but only independent thinking!" She added, "Thus, I think we must each study the legislation, how the candidates vote and decide for ourselves whether we think a vote is in favor of or against Israel's best interests:' Our JN Mission AMERICAN GEM SOCIETY' July 10 • 2008 Douglas Miller Kevin F Prihod president and CEO Detroit Science Center The Jewish News aspires to communicate news and opinion that's useful, engaging, enjoyable and unique. MEMBER A6 Stay The Course Once again, Palestinian Arabs occupying Gaza, despite their well- publicized promises, are firing missiles into Israel, causing more destruction and injuries. Once again, Israel adheres to agree- ments and the Palestinian Arabs violate them. So much for the "peace process" Anyone with good intentions and half a brain can see that the so-called "peace process" is, at best, a stacked-deck farce designed to put an end to Israel. Just connect the dots. Every goodwill gesture, every conces- sion, every surrender of land by Israel is met by a resumption of violence, a continuation of aggression and an escalation of demands by the Palestinian Arabs. Since Israel foolishly surrendered Gaza three years ago, there have been thousands of missiles fired into Israel and many armed border incursions, which have resulted in immense dam- age, hundreds of casualties and several deaths. And as long as Israel doesn't fight to win, there will be no end in sight Stop the insanity now No more concessions. No more surren- der. No more goodwill gestures. Let the Palestinian Arabs prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are willing to accept the existence of Israel as a Jewish state. And let them demonstrate that they are now as committed to living peacefully with Israel as they have been addicted to wiping her off the map. Davidson's Gift Michigan can certainly take pride in its favorite son, Bill Davidson, for his recently announced gift to the Institute of Science Education at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel ("Davidson Gift," July 10,A22) Davidson's commitment to math and science skills for chil- dren everywhere is a model for Michigan's business leaders and all those who support the growth of technology. The Detroit Science Center, one of the 10 largest science muse- urns in the United States, is committed to inspiring the next gen- eration of Michigan's engineers by exciting them about math and science. Our new middle school, which will open at the Science Center in 2009, is a further commitment to educate children through a rigorous math and science curriculum. Like Davidson, we recognize that educating and inspiring young people to pur- sue careers in engineering and technology is vital for the success and prosperity of a state or a country. Israel is an example of a country with limited natural resourc- es that has prospered due to a commitment to technological leadership. We function in a global economy and the technologi- cal success of a staunch ally like Israel will help the United States and Michigan in the long term. We congratulate Davidson for his vision and commitment to making the world better through enhanced science and math education. JN
