"I see them walking in groups, and
I like to capture that motion:' explains
Goodman, who uses colorful pencils
and makes eraser marks to accentuate
the feeling of movement.
"I always have liked working with
figures and will show musicians in
performance. I am fascinated by ani-
mals and draw them as they appear in
their natural settings."
Goodman, who has worked in
advertising and as an art director,
brings both framed and unframed
work. She earned a bachelor's degree
from Syracuse University and a
master's degree from the University of
Massachusetts.
"I like the grittiness of pencils and
the stray marks that can add to the
effects;' she says. "Most of my work is
derived from photographs. Often, I'll
begin by focusing on a single person
or element within that photo and then
let my imagination take over:'
Adam Spector, whose pieces have
been on display at Pewabic Pottery in
Detroit, also likes defined artistry, but
his medium is ceramics. He will be
showing functional pieces — trays,
teapots, jars — with many historical
patterns, some picking up on the pat-
terns of Islamic tiles, at the Ann Arbor
Street Art Fair.
"I'm interested in the effect of com-
binations of glazes:' says Spector, who
has studied privately and at Alfred
University, in New York where the art-
ist lives. "I like working with pottery
because of the tactile experience, and
I've been inspired by the designs in
Moorish architecture'
Burt Isenstein, who teaches at the
Art Institute of Chicago, works with
his wife, Nancy Gardner, in making

hand-built pottery.
"We'll have some 200 pieces with
us in Ann Arbor, and people will find
a new line of patterns and shapes:'
Isenstein says. "Our pieces combine
decorative and functional features,
and we have patterns that resemble
patchwork quilts."
The couple, also showing at the Ann
Arbor Street Art Fair, has been known
for doing whimsical designs on func-
tional ware, some picking up on home
designs.
"As we go to the fairs, we see people
that we know; and we like getting
together with other artists:' Isenstein
says.
Jana Epstein, based in Atlanta, also
likes the personal connections made
at the art fairs and especially enjoys
meeting clients. She offers black-and-
white photos colored by applications
of liquid solutions.
"I photograph old architectural
landscapes as well as people and try to
showcase about 85 different images:'
explains Epstein, a graduate of the
University of Georgia who will be at
the State Street Area Art Fair. "The
photos are matted and framed using
antique ceiling tiles and wood.
"I thought I would go into graphic
design, but I fell in love with photog-
raphy that was not commercial. I did
my first art show 10 years ago, and I
feel that I have never had to compro-
