On May 29, Yeshivat Akiva in
Southfield inducted five students into
the National Honor Society. The stu-
dents, all members of the junior class,
are Rebecca Grossman of Oak Park,
Ariella Schwarcz of Oak Park, Sarah
Sptizer of West Bloomfield, Lyla Craft
of West Bloomfield and Miriam Barth
of Oak Park. After an election on May
30, the Akvia middle and upper school
elected a new board for student coun-
cil, which includes president, Ariella
Schwarcz; vice president, Yagil Tsaidi;
secretary, Lyla Craft; and treasurer,
Rebecca Grossman.
Dr. Edie Goldenberg, professor of
political science and public policy at
the University of Michigan's Gerald
R. Ford School of Public Policy, was
presented with an honorary doc-
tor of humane letters degree from
Yeshiva University in New York.
Goldenberg is a life member of the
Corporation of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (board of
trustees), is an academic fellow of the
Carnegie Corporation and serves on
the Academic Advisory Committee at
Yeshiva University.
Holli Targan, a
partner with the
Southfield office
of Michigan-based
law firm Jaffe Raitt
Heuer & Weiss PC,
has been elected
president-elect
Targan
of the Electronic
Transactions
Association. She will serve a one-year
term commencing July 2008. She is
chair of Jaffe's Finance Law Group and
concentrates her practice in the areas
of credit and debit processing, stored
value, merchant cash advance and pay-
ment systems law.
Niskar
Dr. Robert C. Niskar
of Farmington Hills
was selected, for the
second year in a row,
by the seniors at the
University of Detroit
School of Dentistry
as the Outstanding
Clinical Faculty
Member.
John R. Sloan of Huntington Woods,
a 2008 graduate of the University of
Michigan with distinction in econom-
ics and German, has been awarded a
Fullbright Scholarship to Germany. He
will teach and study in Cologne for the
next academic year.
He will then enter
graduate school. He
is the son of David
and Kathy Sloan.
Jeremy B. Wolf of
Royal Oak received
admission to the
Sloan
Ph.D. program in
history at the University of California.
He received a graduate fellowship
award starting with the fall 2008
term. He is the son of Suzy and Sonny
Modrano and Allen Wolf.
Laurice E.
Covensky, daugh-
ter of Harvey and
Edith Covensky of
Bloomfield Hills,
passed the Michigan
State Bar and
was sworn in as a
Covensky
Michigan attorney
at the Oakland County new lawyer cer-
emony in May.
Samuel Borstein,
son of Sharon and
Richard Bortstein of
Buffalo Grove, Ill.,
has been accepted
to the High School
Marine Lake
Ecology Program, a
Borstein
mentorship run by
the John G. Shedd
Aquarium in Chicago. He will attend
classes at the Shedd followed by a
week living on the Great Lakes schoo-
ner S/V Denis Sullivan. Borstein is the
grandson of Pearl and Sy Manello of
West Bloomfield.

Youth Assistance on
Klein
May 13 as one of two
students nominated
at Doherty Elementary for a Youth
Recognition Award. Klein assisted stu-
dents with special needs, most recently
helping a student with autism prepare
for and participate in a presentation to
the Board of Education. Along with a
proclamation from the Oakland County
Board of Commissioners, Klein received
awards from U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg,
State Reps. David Law, Fran Amos and
Nancy Cassis and Oakland County
Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
