CHILD'S PLAY
The Golf Prelude Party is for adults, but the ones who benefit are children.
CATCH, the charity started by Sparky Anderson to improve the quality of
life for pediatric patients at Children's Hospital of Michigan and Henry Ford
Hospital, both based in Detroit, will raise funds with a gala and golf match. The
party, open to the public, runs 5:30-9 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at the Ritz-Carlton
in Dearborn, where there will be a special appearance by Kirsten Hagland, Miss
America 2008 and a Farmington Hills native. Guests will be served a strolling
dinner and be given the opportunity to buy coveted sports memorabilia that will
be auctioned. The next day's golf classic is closed to the public. Admission to the
party is $100. (313) 876-9399; catchcharity.org .

a center for gymnastics, karate, tumbling, wrestling and much more. Planned
by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the annual display of physical talent is
among the largest national multi-sport events for youth in the United States and
moves to a new city every summer. In Novi, admission is $40 for all games and
$12 for events held in one day. A complete schedule is available at detroitsports.

YOUNG LOVE
Summer means romance alfresco as the Water Works Theatre Company updates
a classic play and presents it in the Starr Jaycee Park, Royal Oak. This year's pro-
duction is Romeo and Juliet, freshly set in a godfather-style Italy. Directed by
Hilberry Theatre veteran Jeff Thomakos, the play will be performed July 24-Aug.
10. The production begins at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 6 p.m.
Sundays, when kids are admitted free. Tickets are $16-$20. For kids who love the
stage, there is an instructional program, KidsAct!, which will be presented Aug.
4-7. The outdoor workshop has each participant present a soliloquy, stage a safe
sword fight, dance and get experiences with the work backstage. Four full days of
learning stage techniques cost $125. (248) 399-3727; waterworkstheatre.com .

ENTERTAINMENT GEM

duces them in concert 8 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
New numbers include "Pretty Amazing Grace" and "Another Day (That Time
Forgot)," which was recorded with Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks. Diamond
will not neglect the earlier hits and will perform those as well. Likely to be on the
program are "Sweet Caroline," "I'm a Believer" and "Cherry, Cherry" Diamond's
four-decade career includes the sale of 125 million recordings worldwide.
Besides the new music, fans are promised some new production techniques and
innovative stage design to give some up-to-date show effects. $55-$120.
