JULY 2008

• J1N platinum

Generations come together for Zappa Plays Zappa, one of the concerts at this
year's Common Ground Music Festival in Lansing. Dweezil Zappa (above),
with a seven-piece band, performs the music of his dad, Frank Zappa. Other top
music stars, sports events, kids' activities and plenty of food are part of Common
Ground, which runs July 7-13 along the banks of the Grand River in Adado
Riverfront Park. Visit the Web site to help arrange a visitor's schedule with picks
that feature Snoop Dogg, Julianne Hough, Kellie Pickier and Lyle Lovett among
a very long list of performers. A Common Card ($85-$95) allows for admission
to all events. Single-day passes ($34-$39) also are available. (800) 585-3737;
commongroundfest. com .

Thirteen could be a lucky number, especially when it becomes the date of a
Sunday filled with meaningful events for families interested in music and art. Judy
Piazza, a percussionist performer and educator, will lead Family Performance:
Rhythm Songs Around the World at 2 p.m. July 13 for visitors to the Detroit
Institute of Arts. Using hand drums from many countries, she will offer an inter-
active experience that also includes didgeridoo, native flute and different vocal
styles. Other museum events on that day include drawing in the galleries, from
1-5 p.m., where instructors help participants. No experience is required for work
on pencil sketches to take home. Later, between 6 and 9 p.m., there will be drop-
in workshops featuring instruction on making simple folk art toys using recycled
material, paper, string and beads. (313) 833-7900; dia.org .
