The Wider Sweep
Beyond the Palestinians, Jacoby warned
against giving up the Golan, which has
proven a strategic asset and rendered
the Syrian border the quietest of all of
Israel's borders.
"Let Syria show that it's genuinely
interested in living with Israel as a
peaceful neighbor should live Jacoby
said. "Then it will be fine to talk about
what to do with the Golan."
I'm leery of giving up the Golan for
any reason. It remains a strategic north-
ern outpost (with panoramic views)
and is part of Eretz Yisrael, the Land of
Israel.
Jacoby maintained that Israel lost
the 2006 Lebanon border war with
Hezbollah. He described the loss as a
disaster for Israel. He said another war
with Hezbollah or its overseer, Iran, is
imminent.
Israel certainly stumbled to the finish
line in that summer 2006 battle, but it
did stunt Hezbollah's weapons buildup
and did show the Lebanese people
that terrorists cannot protect them. It
exposed the limits of Hezbollah's arse-
nal despite Iran's $200 million annual
investment in weapons and Syria's
supply of heavy rockets and anti-tank
weaponry.
The war also heightened the moder-
ate Arab states' concern about Iran, cre-
ating a climate more conducive to coop-
eration among moderate Arabs, Israel
and the U.S., according to the American
Israel Public Affairs Committee.
As it marks 60 years of statehood,
Israel remains an incredible story of
revival and democracy in a part of the
world that aims to repel it.
Jeff Jacoby caught the dichotomy
of Israel well. As he put it: "It's an
inspiration for Jews all over the world
— an incredible chapter of ancient
history brought to life in modern
times. Simultaneously, it's this miser-
able, unpleasant, exhausting story of
enemies who refuse to accept Jews in
their neighborhood."
By any standard, Israel will need the
skills of staying strong, keeping vigilant
and countering lies as much in its next
60 years as it has needed over its first
60 years.
