Gift To Technion

Guard Your Teeth!

Haifa, Israel
In part to commemorate Israel's 60th birthday, the Louis C.
and Edith Blumberg Foundation Classrooms and Lounge
have been dedicated at the Dalia Maydan Center for
Advanced Materials Studies at the Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology.
The dedication came during the 2008 American Technion
Society Mission to Israel. A total of 102 supporters of the New
York-based foundation participated in the mission, raising
more than $16 million for Technion. The dedication took place
May 26.
"My parents wanted to do something this year to honor and
commemorate Israel's 60th birthday in a special way',' said
their daughter, Julee Landau, who was on hand for the dedica-
tion."I was very impressed by the students, professors and
researchers who are developing real scientific breakthroughs
for the world."
The Blumbergs were founding members of the ATS' Detroit
chapter. Alene and Graham Landau of Bloomfield Hills,
daughter Julee Landau of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Larry Jackier
of Bloomfield Hills are trustees of the foundation, which has
supported numerous Technion projects, such as academic
chairs and cardiac and biomedical engineering research.
The Dalia Maydan Center is a Technion interdisciplinary
center of excellence that focuses on developing advanced
materials used in high-tech industries.

According to the American Dental Association, each year more than 4 mil-
lion Americans sustain oral injuries playing sports or participating in rec-
reational activities. Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard cannot only help
prevent broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face, or jaw, they can
also reduce concussions.
Statistics like these made Dr. Mark Berkman and Dr. Lainie Shapiro,
board certified orthodontists in Commerce Township, wonder what they
could do to help local community members protect themselves against
sports-related mouth injuries. "We see so many people with trauma to
teeth that could easily have been avoided if a well-made mouthguard had
been worn. We want to do our part;' said Berkman.
With this in mind, they have hosted an annual Mouthguard Extravaganza
since 2006, opening their orthodontic office after-hours to the entire com-
munity to provide custom-fit athletic mouthguards free of charge.
The next Mouthguard Extravaganza will be held Thursday, July 31, at
the office of Berkman + Shapiro Orthodontics in Commerce Township.
Participants will receive a custom mold of their teeth. This mold is then
used to fabricate a mouthguard that is customized to fit nearly perfectly.
Mouthguards can be made in a variety of colors and a strap can be added
if desired so that it may be attached to a helmet. Although the fabrica-
tion takes hours, the mouthguards are generally ready to be picked up the
same day.
Because of technical aspects related to the customized design and
fitting process of the mouthguards, this event is by appointment. To
sign up, contact Berkman + Shapiro Orthodontics, (248) 360-7878 or
