Dear
Bar , in-
trigued by the
"health" claims
made for some
of these new
chocolate bars/snacks. Please
clarify. Thanks, Mary.
A
nswer: Dear Mary,
Typically, the bases for
these health claims for
chocolate focus on plant-derived
phytonutrients called flavanols (a
class of flavonoids). Cocoa beans
(a primary ingredient in choco-
late) are a rich source of flavanols.
A growing body of research
suggests that cocoa flavanols may
have a beneficial impact on circu-
latory (heart and brain) health in
humans.
It should be noted that
certain teas and red wine
also have nutritionally
significant concentrations
of flavanols, but they
)
differ in amount and
type from those found
) in cocoa beans.
Well that all sounds
great, so why not just
throw out our other
food and subsist on dark
chocolate? The answer is
that chocolate bars/snacks (even
those touted for their health ben-
efits) often derive 30% or more of
their calories from saturated fat
and another 40% or more from re-
fined sugars—not exactly healthy
dietary ratios.
