Charter Possibilities
The idea of a government-sponsored
school that promotes some language
other than English in the United States is
engaging, but why should it shock Jews
("Emboldened Opportunity," Jun19,
A5) ? I thought Hebrew is the national
language of our nation, unless, of
course, you prefer Yiddish.
Somehow, when the idea comes up,
people forget that the Detroit communi-
ty was blessed with a system of commu-
nity Hebrew schools that stretched from
what was Northwest Detroit to Livonia
in western Wayne County. The IN men-
tioned the United Hebrew Schools in
passing in a single sentence in an article
a while ago. Curious, too, since some
4,000 thousand young people attended
at least 10 branches, getting there in
a fleet of 40 buses. In fact, I recall the
graduation ceremonies were held at fair-
ly large auditoriums just fill the number
of people who attended them.
Yes, why not a charter school where
Hebrew is taught, at least on par with
English. What's wrong with a Jew who
knows how to speak Hebrew?

Pipes' Bias
Electing the next leader of the free
world is a significant event. It behooves
us all to enter the voting booth with as
much knowledge as possible about the
candidates so that our choice of the next
American president is an informed one.
This means eschewing impressions
created by 30-second sound bites in
favor of studying the voting records of
the candidates, visiting their Web sites
and reading their position papers and
speeches. There is no excuse for letting
others do our thinking for us.
Consider the Special Commentary by
Daniel Pipes "Obama Vs. McCain On The
Middle East" ( June 19, A32). Although
billed as Opinion-Other Views, nowhere
in the body of his column does Mr. Pipes
ever use the words "I believe" or "I think."
Rather he employs an insidious
format — interplay of paraphrase and
fragmented, context-less quotes from
the candidates. This format enables
Mr. Pipes to present his personal bias

as if it is fact - based information. It is
subtle, manipulative and potentially
effective with an unalert reader.
Patriotism is not measured by bum-
per sticker platitudes. Being an informed
voter is a patriotic duly. Protecting and
practicing democracy requires work and
commitment. As citizens, we must all
exercise our voting rights with a sense
of responsibility and honor. This means
thorough study of the issues, the candi-
dates, and ultimately, a voting decision
based on independent thinking.
