Mouth protectors which typically cover the upper teeth, can cushion a blow to the f
that otherwise might cause an Injury to the mouth. A misdirected elbow In a one on o
basketball game, or a spill of a bicycle can leave you with chipped or broken teeth,
damage to a tooth, or even tooth loss. A mouth protector can limit the risk of such inju
as well as protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining.
When wearing braces, soft tissue injuries are still a short-term concern, however
orthodontic association estimates injuries such as tooth avulsion (being dislodged),
serious dental trauma is actually reduced by over 90%. This is because the braces lin
the teeth together and evenly distribute the shock over a greater area. ft is Important to
remember that mouth protectors can also be used in conjunction with braces. Doing so
reduces soft tissue and dental injury by a large and significant percentage. The mouth
guard or protector provides a barrier between the braces and cheek or lips and th L1S44
'
limits injury.
