Chef Challenge

American Liver Foundation's "Taste of Flavors" bids for No.1 ranking.

p

OTPOURRI ...
As local charitable organiza-
tions are seemingly pulling in
their horns by having less extravagant
affairs, votes by many folks for No. 1
novel entertainment status are going
to American Liver Foundation ... The
recent 4th Annual Taste of Flavors by
its Michigan chapter at Ritz-Carlton,
Dearborn, was even bigger than ever
with 25 top-echelon executive chefs each
preparing his or her own menu tableside
with wine pairings to individual groups of
10 persons each at 25 tables ... Limited
seating for 250 people only made up the
sold-out crowd.
Best Table Decoration Award went
to Paula and Jeremy Grandon, for their
Jeremy Restaurant and Bar, Keego Harbor,
adornment that depicted lakeshore liv-
ing with beach and seaside styling ...
Their five-course light menu was heartily
welcomed after the bevy of lavish hors
d'oeuvres made and passed by the chefs
themselves at the silent auction reception
before dinner ... Assisting Paula and Chef
Jeremy was their manager, Michael Farms.
Vince Passalacqua helped out his chef
from Mario's, Guy Pelino ... Sea Grille's
Chef Mark Rochelle was assisted by bosses
Craig and Bobbie Dilworth ... Morton's of
Southfield's Chef Virgie Marble was aided
by dining room captain Al Sako ... Tribute
Chef Richard Travis had help from General
Manager Keith Mazziotta, etc. ... Suzanne
Gilson, Flavors of Michigan chairgal, and
Peggy Goldberg, co-chairlassie, and their
staff deserve a lot of kudos for an amaz-
ingly wonderful job.
NEW RESTAURANT, Von Lon's, that
opened June 1, at the former site of Loving
Spoonful, Copper Creek Golf Course,

12 Mile between Halsted and
Haggerty, Farmington Hills,
is a family-owned American
cuisine operation ... Arthur
and Jacqueline Mitchell, Avante
and Ebony Mitchell and Ahvon
Mitchell ... Avante is also gen-
eral manager and his mother,
Jacqueline, is executive chef ...
Seafood, steaks, ribs, etc., are
featured Monday-Thursday,
lunch 11-3, dinner 5-9; Friday,
dinner 5-10; Saturday, dinner 4-
11; Sunday, dinner, 1-8 ... One of the lunch
specialties is a memory of yesteryears ...
At Von Lon's it's called a Soda Shop Special
Angus burger grilled on toasted onion roll
and served with seasoned or sweet potato
fries and a choice of strawberry, vanilla or
chocolate milkshake, $11.95.
MAIL DEPT. ... "From the moment
Mark and I arrive and our car is taken
by courteous valet parkers, a most enjoy-
able visit begins at Bacco Ristorante on
Northwestern Highway, Southfield. We are
greeted by a friendly hostess like Alena
[Depew], and its wonderful bartender,
Valentino [Marcu], who help us select
from Bacco's excellent Italian wine list as
well as mixing terrific martini's. Bacco's
has a great appetizer called Zuccini Flower
that is requested by many customers and
is so very good. We highly enjoy its main
menu and outstanding Italian presenta-
tions" ... Ida Nemzin
NAME OF THE third family res-
taurant being opened by George Lukaj
will be Grand Tavern, Grand River and
Drake, Novi, former site of Applebee's
... George owns George's Honey Tree on
Northwestern Hwy., West Bloomfield ...
Grand Tavern will be operated by his cous-

in partner there, Mario Lukaj,
and George's son Anton
Lukaj ... George recently
took ownership of the Village
Place restaurant on Orchard
Lake Road, Orchard Lake,
with partner there, John
Sinshtaj who, with Robert
Lukaj, another son of George,
are its operators ... The
name will soon be changed
to Village Palace.
NO TRUTH THAT Fiddler
International Restaurant, Orchard Lake
Road, West Bloomfield, has closed ... Just
different days and hours ... Open for din-
ner only, Thursday 5-9, and Friday and
Saturday, 5-midnight; Sunday, noon-9.
NOVEL DISH DEPT. ... The Neapolitan
Sampler with four all different quarters at
Tomatoes Apizza, Warren Shopping Center,
14 Mile and Middlebelt, Farmington Hills.
EVERY TIME HE receives an award
or is lauded in the press, barrister Henry
Baskin knows in his heart how proud
of him his late parents would have been
... Max and Gladys Baskin kvelled in
his every endeavor ... This time, it was
his receiving the third annual Dream
Catching Award given by the local chap-
ter of Variety, the Children's Charity, at
Townsend Hotel.
Henry's excellent reputation and
exploits in the legal field have been well
documented and his work in helping chil-
dren is a much deserved honor ... "Hank"
is a very dedicated vice-president of the
local Variety, and it was most fitting that
about 310 people watched him receive
the Dream Catcher tribute plus being
thrilled by the wonderful entertainment
of Michael Feinstein, enjoying dinner

and dancing to Johnny Trudell and his
fine band ... Not only did the evening's
co-chairmen Mickey Shapiro and Richard
Gershensen and their committees do
an excellent job with the event, aided by
Executive Secretary Jennie Cascio, but
Mickey and Richard turned out to be
quite the comedic entertainers themselves
with humorous stand-up bantering that
warmed the crowd ... And the beauti-
ful invocation words of Rabbi Dannell
Schwartz were choice.
IF YOU SEE MEMBERS of her family,
like Charlene Green, walking around with
a sort of proud swagger, it's because of
the honored exploit of her mother, Roslyn
Kaufman ... She has finally achieved
the coveted rank of Silver Life Master in
bridge at age 88 ... Back in 1936, the rank
of life master came from the American
Bridge League on tournament points
gained as it is today, but there was no
designation such as bronze, silver or gold,
with its difficult attainment on each level
... It is a happy culmination after 40 years
for Roslyn ... but no happier than her
family members.
