The Paskowitz family in Surfwise
1
Surfin' U.S.A.
Special to the Jewish News
T
he old stereotype of the
Jewish father, who comes
home from work and buries
his head in the newspaper while his
wife runs the household and raises
the kids, receives another kick in the
shorts, courtesy of Surfwise.
Doug Pray's documentary focuses
on an iconoclast, a rebel and a
domestic tyrant named Dorian "Doc"
Paskowitz. A Stanford-educated Jewish
M.D. in Hawaii, Paskowitz was in his
30s when his second marriage crashed
in flames in the 1950s.
Paskowitz had long been a surfing
aficionado, and he decided to toss his
medical credentials, status and income
and start over. He split for Israel in
1959 to hang out with a branch of his
family, introducing surfing to Tel Aviv
during his brief tenure.
The crux of Surfwise is the family
Doc created back in the States with his
third wife, Juliette. They brought up
nine children — eight boys and a girl
— in a succession of cramped vans,
always on the road in warm-weather
climes.
It would be hard to imagine a less
typically Jewish family, then or now
The kids were home-schooled, raised
vegetarian and encouraged to surf
practically every day of their lives.
Paskowitz eschewed saving money
and providing material comforts
for his brood —secular Southern
Californians who nonetheless lit can-
dles every Friday night, wherever they
were — aiming instead to instill in
them self-sufficiency and confidence.
Now in his late 80s, Paskowitz
recounts this one-of-a-kind fam-
ily saga with a mixture of pride and

certainty that his despotic approach
was infinitely better preparation for
life than the standard-issue house in a
homogenous suburb.
But a different picture emerges as
Doc's grown children take over the
narrative. Paskowitz may have been a
utopian and a health and exercise buff,
but he also wielded absolute control.
More than one child attests to Doc's
penchant for humiliation and for fos-
tering competition among the boys. At
the same time, Paskowitz maintained
an oft-stated goal of keeping the fam-
ily together and intact long past the
natural time when children go off on
their own.
Late in the film, Doc confesses his
guilt at having done nothing in his
early 20s while the Holocaust took
place.
This "survivor's mentality:' as
someone refers to it in the film, may
be the key to Doc's family values. His
commitment to the survival of the
Jewish people manifested itself in an
extraordinary number of offspring
(by American Jewish standards) and a
desire to raise and keep them separate
and independent of the mainstream
world but dependent on each other.
Alas, it didn't turn out that way.
Navah, the daughter, lives an admit-
tedly mainstream Jewish life in subur-
ban L.A., but the sons' connection to
Judaism is more tenuous. The greater
tragedy, though, may be the wounds
and insults that endure among the
sons, fracturing the family in ways
that break Doc's heart.
