SALUTE TO
IN GREENFIELD VILLAGE
JULY 2-5, 2008
Aid Girls' Program
Sixteen-year-old Alex D'Amore
Braver of Troy and his band, Out
of the Blue, made a special appear-
ance May 29, as the Birmingham
Temple Community Impact
Committee sponsored a school
incentive party for 38 girls enrolled
in the Alternatives for Girls
Prevention Program.
In all, members of the
Farmington Hills-based donated
more than $900 in support of the
event. Fifteen members contributed
their time or made an in-kind
donation.
Program participants who have
maintained a grade point average
of 3.0 or higher during the academ-
ic year, or who have raised their
GPA by at least .5, were recognized.
Other temple members who
contributed to the event included
Everett Cronizer of Rochester Hills,
a CVS pharmacy supervisor, who
arranged for his employer to donate
a gift bag containing toiletries,
school supplies and small toys for
each honoree. CVS also donated
cameras and a CD player.
Donating — and serving — cus-
tom-made cakes for the event was
temple member and Sunday school
teacher Harriet Ivlaza of West
Bloomfield.
Founded in 1987, Alternatives for
Girls Prevention Program serves
girls and young women (ages 5-
18) who are at risk of dropping
out of school, abusing drugs or
alcohol, becoming pregnant, engag-
ing in gang activities or becoming
involved in abusive relationships.
Participants receive the support
and resources they need to succeed
academically and to develop sound
decision-making, problem-solving
and conflict-resolution skills.
At the party, each of the 38
honorees received certificates of
recognition from state Sen. Hansen
Clarke, state Rep. Marsha G. Cheeks
and state Rep. Steve Tobocman
along with gifts donated by mem-
bers of the Birmingham Temple.
Family, friends and volunteers were
on hand to lend their support.
