Dear
Bar, y
son was in an
automobile ac-
cident and suf-
fered cognitive
impairment. He now has multiple
problems with his eating and nu-
trition. Can you offer any advice/
insight? Thanks, Ronnie.
nswer: Dear Ronnie, It
sounds like your son suf-
ers from Traumatic Brain
Injury (TBI). Unfortunately, TBI
and other brain injuries/impair-
ments (e.g., Alzheimer's) can pres-
ent a number of nutritional and
dietary issues involving the health
of the affected individual.
Af
The first and perhaps most
important step is to obtain
a proper evaluation of the
-.,.?/ patient. This is usually
' ' done as part of a team
approach involving a
primary care physician,
registered dietitian,
and other appropri-
ate professionals. The
questions a nutrition
evaluation seeks to
answer are: (1) What was
the nutritional status prior
to injury? (2) What is the current
nutritional status and how does it
impact recovery? (3) What should
the nutritional status be?
Each case is different, but some
typical medical/nutritional issues
are: physical problems (e.g., swal-
lowing); loss of appetite, taste or
smell; fatigue; memory and coor-
dination challenges; and others.
A registered dietitian can help.
