Let's Get Better Together! ized procedures. After eight days in Jerusalem, Leflcowitz successfully performed the foot surgery, leaving Adler's recovery in Jaffe's care. Lefkowitz returned to the U.S. feeling a sense of accomplish- ment. Jaffe, with Lefkowitz's assis- tance, was the catalyst in introducing a new procedure to Israel. Together, Lefkowitz and Jaffe see this as just the beginning of a mutually rewarding relationship. "It is important for physicians here to realize how fortunate we are to have all the instruments and protocols in place that allow us to do the wonder- ful things we can for patients here in the U.S.," says Lefkowitz. "I think it is important for all physicians to share their expertise around the world ... and take a more active role in reaching out worldwide rather than just here in our own community." To date, Lefkowitz has trained more than 50 resident doctors who have gone on to leadership roles in their state and national organizations. He has lectured both locally as well as internationally on foot and ankle sur- gery. Lefkowitz maintains private practic- es in Ferndale, Milford and Commerce Township and shares those respon- sibilities with associate and partner physicians. He has held leadership positions in both hospitals, commu- nity organizations and continues to publish in medical journals and lends a helping hand to other physicians when asked to assist in complex surgi- cal procedures. ❑ tor for DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, Detroit. Hiller's, ALS team up to combat Lou Gehrig's disease. S Fur ~ i as about the organization. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neu- romuscular disease that affects 30,000 people nationwide, including more than 1,000 in Michigan. ALS is diagnosed in individuals as young as in their mid-20s to those in their 70s. Only 10 percent of patients with ALS live longer than 10 years after diagnosis. In addition to offering and con- tributing to a variety of local educa- tional, religious and nonprofit entities through initiatives like the Hiller's Scrip Card program, Hiller's has a his- tory of ALS support, notably through the founding of the Hiller ALS Clinic and Research Center at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. Scrip Card Program shoppers contribute through their purchases. For every $1 loaded onto a Hiller's Markets Scrip Card, ALS of Michigan receives 5 percent. "Today, there is no known cure for ALS. We are working diligently, pursuing promising research trials. Regardless of size, every single dona- tion makes an impact," said Jim Hiller. The checkout donation campaign began during ALS Awareness Month, which Congress recognized for the month of May. It also coincides with the 30th anniversary of ALS of Michigan. As of now, there is no end- date to the campaign. ❑ 14111111111 ()illy, Prier Nielsen tIlosl Principles) is available for Exeltisi% e Pri•ate inns on Discover the Total Package: Health, Fitness, and Lifestyle. one Personal Training anO Si•Yli011S are available in 1 ► 0111• fir Melanie Moss is public relations coordina- All Of Hope outhfield-based Hiller's Markets is conducting a fundraising project in its lat- est fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis by teaming up with ALS of Michigan to raise money for ALS research as well as patient and com- munity services.
