to pay the filing fees and court costs
of pro-bono lawyers participating in a
JFS program on behalf of low-income

funding to increase the number of
Jewish female mentor/mentee matches;
to develop and offer gender-spe-
cific training and events; and to make
Mentors for Girls a permanent program
within Mentor Connections.
•IFS, $18,200, to provide escorted
transportation to facilitate the visiting
of home-bound elderly women with
more able-bodied elderly women who
do not drive. These women-to-women
matches will be part of JFS' Friendly
Visitor Program.
• Jewish Home and Aging Services,
$13,018, to provide stimulating educa-
tional and cultural workshops taught
by prominent, professional local art-
ists, writers, musicians and perform-

Because of Michigan's economy poppy
contributions have fallen off, so 27 of
32 able applicants will get scholarships.
The poppy money also goes to reha-
bilitation for veterans and families. The
presentation will take place at the Jewish
Community Campus in Oak Park.

develop a stronger Jewish commu-
nity in northern Michigan by offering
Jewish programming for tots, teens and
women with the goal of enabling Jewish
families in the broader Petoskey area
to raise their children Jewishly, enjoy
Jewish learning and experience life
cycle and social activities in a Jewish
context.
•JAS, $20,000, a one-time special
allocation for a part-time social worker
who will assist those affected by the
Hechtman II fire, including residents,
their families and Hechtman staff.

JWV membership is declining as

80s. "We have some Korean War vet-
erans, but they, too, are getting up in
age," Lipman said. "In a sense, getting
new members, thankfully because
of no new wars, is difficult. We know
there are many veterans who were in
service and have never joined. In order
to keep our organization active, we ask
anyone who is eligible to join us."
Michigan veterans have been going
to Battle Creek V.A. Hospital for 50
years on Christmas, bringing gifts and
food for 250-300 patients, he said.
"We sponsor a picnic in summer
for the veterans at Battle Creek and all
patients look forward to our coming."
