Sally Krugel remembers well the
words that comforted her brother, Al, at
the end of his life. He could no longer
speak, yet his eyes lit up every time a rabbi
from Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy
Network sat beside him, speaking the
Yiddish he knew as a child.
Today Sally, a long-time community vol-
unteer and retired development profes-
sional, helps organize JHCN's marketing
efforts.
"I am thankful I can contribute my profes-
sional skills, but I have come away with so
much more than I give. It has enriched my
own life," Sally said. "Our community is
blessed to have JHCN."

HERBERT DAIEN,
84, of Farmington
Hills, died June 6,
2008, surrounded by
his loving family.
He was born
Nov. 13, 1923, in
Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Daien
Canada, the son of
Harry and Sarah
Daien. He was very proud for serving
in the Royal Canadian Air Force dur-
ing World War II, as an Air Force elec-
trician responsible for maintaining the
Lancaster Bombers.
After the war, he returned to work
in the family business, H. Daien &
Sons Electrical Contractors, until he
moved his family to Detroit, where he
continued his trade for many years.
He sang in the Adat Shalom High
Holiday choir, was a member of Beth
Shalom Synagogue and volunteered
in the Jewish community in various
capacities, including the resettlement
of Jewish immigrants to the Detroit
metropolitan area.
He will be remembered for his
wonderful sense of humor, his loving
and caring personality and for leaving
a lasting impression on everyone he
met. His children and grandchildren
will remember forever the stories he
told them and the songs that he sang.
The words inscribed in his and his
wife's wedding bands to each other,
"Always, Forever," speaks of the love
and memories that will always remain
in our hearts.
Mr. Daien is survived by his sons
and daughter-in-law, Gary and Mara
Daien of Livonia, Michael Daien of
Farmington Hills; daughter and son-
in-law, Diane and Steven Berlow of
Farmington Hills; grandchildren,
Rachel and Laura Daien, Joshua and
Danielle Daien, Jason and Jessica
Berlow; brother and sister-in-law,
Cantor Gerry and Peril Daien; brother-
in-law, Bob Robinson of Winnipeg,
Manitoba; brother-in-law and sister-
in-law, Elliott and Diane Spiller of
Oak Park; many loving nieces and
nephews.
He was the beloved husband of the
late Leba (Spiller) Daien; brother-in-
law of the late Trudy Robinson, the late
Jack and the late Aileen Spiller.
Interment at Adat Shalom Memorial
Park, where the American, British, and
Canadian War Veterans honored Mr.
Daien with their participation in his
funeral service. Contributions may be
made to the American Cancer Society,
the American Diabetes Association,
the Jewish Federation, Congregation
Beth Shalom or the veteran organiza-
tion of one's choice. Arrangements by
Hebrew Memorial Chapel.
ESTHER MOLLY GOODMAN, 95, of
Southfield, died Friday, June 13, 2008,
after battling a debilitating condi-
tion and the ravages of time with the
indomitable spirit and fierce determi-
nation that defined her to the very end.
Despite the infirmities she suffered
or the pain she endured, she always
lived life as a participant, never as
an observer. She died peacefully in
her apartment at the Fountains at
Franklin, where she made her home
and found a community of friends for
the past 14 years.
She was born on Nov. 25, 1912,
in Ripon, Wis. At the age of 11, she
moved with her family to Michigan,
where she resided for the remainder of
her life.
Mrs. Goodman is survived by her
beloved daughter, Linda Goodman of
Connecticut; devoted nieces and neph-
ews, Harold Weksler, Leonard Weksler,
Carolyn Jacobs, Nancy Tuttleman,
Judie Weisman, Sandie Weiss, Derrill
Smith, Karen Bishop, Michael Smith,
Julie Wiehl; 21 great-nieces and great-
nephews and their spouses.
She was the wife of the late of
Hyman Goodman; sister of the late
Frieda Weksler, the late John Zalman,
the late George Zalman, the late Louis
Zalman and the late Pearl Smith; aunt
of the late Sidney Weksler.
A private graveside service was held
at Machpelah Cemetery. Contributions
may be made to the Alzheimer's
Association. Arrangements by
Dorfman Chapel.
EVELYN GOREN, 82, of West
Bloomfield, died June 13, 2008.
She is survived by her daughters
and sons-in-law, Barbara and Curt
Freedland of Odessa, Fla., Susan
and Jay Kalisky of West Bloomfield;
grandchildren, Alana Freedland, Jared
Freedland, Josh Kalisky, Chad Kalisky;
sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Diana
and Morris Bensman; loving nieces
and nephews.
Mrs. Goren was the beloved wife
of the late Jack Goren; loving sister of
the late Helen Tischler, the late Martin
Green, the late Jack Green.
