A Good List!
Each week when I read the synagogue
listings in the Spirituality section (this
week, A33), I appreciate anew Temple
Israel's sponsorship of this important
information.
As a person who does a lot of travel-
ing as part of my work here in our Jew-
ish community I know firsthand how
important it is for a visitor to have
ready access to information on local
Jewish services offered.
Temple Israel's sponsorship is a real
community builder for Jewish Detroit.
Todah rabah [thank you very much]!

Justice Is On Point
"Justice, Justice, shalt thou pursue"
(Deuteronomy 16:20).
Your article "Kosher Beef" (June 12,
A19) completely misses the point in
the controversy about Agriprocessors,
the Rubashkin-owned slaughterhouse
in Iowa.
While it is true that observant Jews
such as this writer will be inconve-
nienced by the interruption in the
availability of kosher red meat, the real
issue is the misconduct that is alleged
to have taken place at their facility.
Based on what we are reading, it
appears that the behavior of these
"pious" Jews has been inexcusable
in the treatment of both their work-
ers and the animals. Nowhere in our
sacred texts are we admonished to
pursue kashrut at all costs.
Rather, we are commanded to pursue
justice. While the Rubashkins are to be
allowed the opportunity to refute the
very serious legal and ethical charges
against them, it does appear that the
evidence against them is damning. This
raises the question of how the rabbis
and the mashgichim involved allowed
this conduct to occur. One is drawn to
the conclusion that their interests and
priorities were elsewhere, with a blind
eye to the suffering of the animals and
the ill treatment of the workers.
It is this egregious behavior and not
the inconvenience to us that should

be the concern of the Jewish News and
our community. Until this is settled,
my family will forego the use of any
products from Agriprocessors and
limit our animal protein to poultry
and fish, which we can obtain from
acceptable sources.
I hope that other observant Jews will
take similar steps and that the Jewish
community will look into the moral
failings that allowed this to happen.

Christmas Lights?
In the Sunday edition of the Detroit
Free Press, there was short article in
the Local News/Wayne County section
about Wayne County Executive Robert
Ficano making cuts in expenditures
("Ficano Seeks Cuts In Expenditures:'
June 15, 2B)
For several years, the county has
sponsored the Wayne County Light
Show on Hines Drive. While it is admi-
rable that the county wants to celebrate
the holidays, it is, in fact, a thinly
veiled event celebrating Christmas at
taxpayer's expense. The county spends
countless dollars erecting, paying for
electricity, taking down and storing
these elaborate lights and displays in
the name of the holidays. No one can
possibly look at those lights and not
think of Christmas.
Let's remember there are thousands
of non-Christians in the county paying
for this. There is no reason this should
continue if for no other reason than
taxpayers should not be paying for
religious displays. Now that the county
is looking to cut expenses, there is no
better time to eliminate this event.
