with them and later went to Virginia
and kept playing with them."
Lewis became interested in instru-
ments when he was 4, after his grand-
father showed him a viola. Too small
to play it, he was diverted to violin,
taking lessons and finding he liked the
experience.
After Interlochen, Lewis felt he had
reached his peak with classical music
and decided to spend a year in Israel
before going to college. His religious
experiences before the trip had been
based at Congregation Beth Shalom in
Oak Park, where he had his bar mitz-
vah, and Hillel Day School.
"I wasn't planning on studying
music at all:' says Lewis, who majored
in human ecology. "I wanted to explore
other things, but I just couldn't escape
the music."
Lewis adds to the group's original
songs. One example is "Sleepover
Party," with the guys singing as if they
were 10-year-old girls.
"Most of the guys in the band aren't
Jewish, but they love klezmer," says the
entertainer, son of Oak Parkers Bobbi
and Joe Lewis. Joe has been a cantorial
soloist. "We'll do a bluegrass song and
then a klezmer song:' says Aaron, "and
it is kind of culture shock."
Lewis, a private instrument teacher
to supplement his income, hopes
to settle in New York and find new

opportunities. In the meantime, he
invites people to visit the group's Web
site (www.specialedshortbus.com ) and
buy recordings, the most recent being
Ground Beef Patrol and Rats in the
Kitchen.
Bobbi Lewis is proud to say that
the band won the Independent Music
World Series/Southeast in Nashville
last September, beating out about
1,000 other bands of all types, and
that her son placed first in the blue-
grass fiddle competition at the Galax
Old Fiddlers Convention last August.
He also is "an eager participant in
the semiannual World Beard and
Mustache Championships competi-
tion," she adds.
"I'm completely on the road;' says
Aaron Lewis, whose summer includes
an appearance at a music festival in
Scotland. "I'll be in and out of the
country this summer." Li

By the 1950s, when he picked up a
young waiter named Eliezer Rath at
the Ramat Aviv Hotel, the confident
Braun had established a top-drawer
reputation and a loyal clientele
among wealthy Israelis and tourists.
From most accounts, the glamor-
ous Braun and the ordinary-looking
Rath were in love and committed to
each other.
But the charismatic Braun never
deprived himself of the corn-
pany of an attractive young man.
Furthermore, he often treated Rath
as a servant more than a partner.
Nobody can know the absolute
truth about other people's relation-
ships, and much of the pleasure
and ephemeral sadness of Stefan
Braun is listening to the testimo-
nies of clients, friends and relatives.
Filmmakers Itamar Alkalay and Nir
Shenhav enjoy doling out revelations

and shifting tones. Stefan Braun is
alternately irreverent and bluesy,
wistful and breezy, nostalgic and
tinged with yearning and bitterness.
They save the most sensational
twist for the end. When Braun died
in 1990, his will left everything
to Rath. The furrier's family was
stunned and began a legal battle
that lasted four years and, inevitably,
destroyed their relationship with
Rath.
Was the suit about money? Or,
even though Braun was out to his
family, did they feel betrayed and
hurt?
For his part, Eliezer is convinced
he's owed for giving 39 years of his
life to waiting on his lover. Li
