Jewish teenager who lost her fight
with bone cancer a few months
before she was to graduate from
West Bloomfield High School. It's
the largest of 52 relays in the tri-
county area; this year, 42 teams and
about 2,000 people participated.
Organizers are proud the event has
raised more than $2-million in its
history.
"We have a lot of involvement
from the Jewish community, start-
ing with many people on our
planning committee," Elias said.
"'Temple Israel, Temple Sir Shalom,
Temple Kol Ami, the Frankel Jewish
Academy and Bittker B'nai B'rith
all have strictly Jewish teams.
Many of these teams have family
activities and beautiful Havdalah
ceremonies in their tents on
Saturday night. People come to
listen, sing and be moved by the
touching way to close Shabbat
which is tied to a feeling of unity
for a cause to fight cancer!"
In spite of soaring gas prices
and Michigan's difficult economy,
this year's relay raised more than
$320,000 and donations are still
coming in. Elias says she's touched
and grateful for the continued sup-
port which she hopes will someday
lead to a cure.
"The goal is for my kids not to
have to live in a world with cancer
and for the people we love never to
have to hear that cancer diagnosis,"
Elias said. "We're just going to keep
fighting this fight — until we finish
it!' ❑
