set up by their parents and a group of
their parents' friends.
Machover, who designs special instru-
ments, also will be doing technical
sound work for the program he narrates.
A demonstration of Hyperscore will
take place in the Music Box before the
concert, and computer terminals in the
atrium lobby will allow the public to try
the new technology
"One thing common to everything I
do is the belief that the arts are among
the deepest, transformative experiences
we have,' Machover says. "I believe that
the greatest experiences in life are not
only deep and transformative but also
communicate in direct and non-preten-
tious ways."
The Detroit festival also offers pieces
by two Jewish icons of 20th-century
music, both of whose work has been
influential and groundbreaking.
The work of 71-year-old Jewish-
born composer Philip Glass, who early
in his career was associated with the
Minimalist movement — he prefers
the term "music with repetitive struc-
tures" — can be heard during Frans

nings to its present diversity, during
"The Changing Earth" program at 4 p.m.
Sunday, June 15.
Glass, a strong supporter of the
Tibetan cause, has for many years been a
practicing Buddhist.
At 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, a work
by 71-year-old composer Steve Reich
will be performed. The "Patterns and
Structures" program opens with Reich's
Different Trains, which won a Grammy
Award in 1989 for Best Contemporary
Classical Composition.
Reich's three-movement piece for
string quartet and tape was inspired by
the composer's childhood memories of
riding trains across the U.S., and joined
with interviews conducted by the com-
poser with Holocaust survivors about
their experiences on the death-camp
trains during World War II.
Reich's compositions, also associ-
ated with the Minimalist movement
early in his career, went in a different
direction in the 1980s with the intro-
duction of historical themes as well as
themes from his Jewish heritage. ❑

Phoebe Laub, the

out of nowhere in 1974 and had
a huge hit with the song "Poetry

with many top acts. Then she

fans knew there a few new record-

voice could be heard singing on
some national TV ads. But, for the
most part, Snow opted to stay at
home, caring for her daughter, who
died last year at 33. She often had
little support and went through
many dark emotional periods.
