Robert Rockaway, former Detroiter and
professor emeritus of Jewish history at Tel
Aviv University, will speak 7 p.m. Thursday,
June 19, at the Holocaust Memorial Center,
Farmington Hills. He will talk on "Letters
from a Viennese Jew Trapped in Vichy
France."
Rockaway will detail the plight of Max
Robert
Vielgut, a young Viennese Jew who fled
Rockaway
Austria in 1939. From 1940-42, Vielgut was
in a series of internment camps in Vichy,
France. During his incarceration, he wrote several letters to a
sister living in the U.S., describing his deteriorating circum-
stances, and expressing his hopes and ears for himself and his
father. The event is free and open to the public.
