Hillel's Blessing
We enjoyed reading the article about Hillel
Day School's 50th anniversary,"50 And
Counting" (May 29, A15). The article gave
us an opportunity to pause and reflect
on the past school year and how our son,
Jonah, has grown and matured.
We take nachas in the fact that our child
is receiving a rich and fulfilling Jewish
education that has instilled in him a
greater sense of appreciation for our tradi-
tions and journey as a Jewish people. For
instance, the Shabbas dinner and evening
have become treasured in our home. Time
slows down and our family can share in
each other's company without the hectic
pace of the past week. Further, Jonah's
education at Hillel Day School has been
the driving force in our son's ability to lead
our table in Jewish prayer and song. Also,
during services our son demonstrates a
steady recognition of prayer and song and
ability to follow along.
Equally important, our son's general
studies programming is not overlooked
and the faculty challenge their students
to learn and perform. It seems a blink ago
that our son was entering the first grade.
Yet just the other day we attended our
son's siddur party and felt so proud watch-
ing our child sing and perform and accept
his prayer book. Part of our joy came
from the fact that our son was happy and
excited about what he learned and mas-
tered and for his opportunity to perform
for all to see.
Hillel has provided a wonderful vehicle
for our child's journey as he makes his
way through the trials and tribulations of
education, friendships, and personal aspi-
rations. As parents, we are all the better for
being blessed with the eyes of a 7 year old.

Proud Of Hillel
It was appropriate that I read the IN cover
story "50 And Counting" (May 29,A15)
in the Hillel Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit parking lot while waiting to pick
up my daughter, Allison.
As a former student whose family has
been and continues to be affiliated with
Hillel, and a mom who was still beam-
ing from her daughter's siddur party the
night before, I read the article about its
50th anniversary with a great and per-
sonal sense of pride.
When I started Hillel in 1979, it only
had two hallways. Now it is a beautiful
two-story campus, equipped with all
the latest technology and designed for
meaningful study and prayer. The quality
of education has continued to be supe-
rior, both in secular and Judaic studies.
What hasn't changed is the school's
acceptance and encouragement of stu-
dents from all branches of Judaism and
its amazing and dedicated teaching staff.
As a proud and active member of
Temple Israel in West Bloomfield my whole
life, I always felt lucky to be a part of two
exceptional Jewish institutions who value
education, Jewish tradition and family.
Being a Reform Jew, I never thought twice
about sending my own child to Hillel.
As my daughter now finishes first grade,
I feel lucky and excited about her contin-
ued education at Hillel Day School and
Temple Israel.

Correction
In "Affirmations" (June 5, A13), Howard
Stone, a teacher Bob Lichtman taught with
during his 50-year career, was mistakenly
identified as Chuck Stone.
