Music by each of the four birthday composers will be sprinkled through- out the 17 concerts that make up the series. The all-birthday concert, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 23, at Temple Beth El, features music by each of the four. The most familiar music at the birthday concert, at least to Detroit- area audiences, is Bolcom's song cycle titled Cabaret Songs, written to poems by his longtime collaborator, Arnold Weinstein. The Pulitzer Prize-winning composer will be at the piano as his wife, soprano Joan Morris, makes her GLCMF debut. Cantor Rachel Gottlieb Kalmowitz of Temple Beth El makes her festival debut at the June 23 concert, perform- ing Harbison's Mirabai Songs. The con- cert also includes Corigliano's Sonata for Violin and Piano, performed by Ida Kavafian and Jeremy Denk. Making their Detroit-area debut in a trio will be violinist Nicholas Kendall and cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio, who join pianist James Tocco, the festival's artistic director, in Tower's string trio For Daniel. Look for the three Shouse Foundation-sponsored groups — the Cecelia String Quartet, the Hausmann String Quartet and Trio Lunaire — at the Preludes, scheduled for 45 minutes before most weekday concerts. Special Preludes will take place at two of the Saturday concerts. On June 21, pianists Edward Auer and Junghwa Moon Auer will present an "anno- tated interview;' titled "Approaching French Piano Music;' to include a performance of Maurice Ravel's Ma Mere l'Oye ("Mother Goose Suite"). The June 28 Prelude will feature Tocco and University of Michigan musicolo- gist Mark Clague discussing "Bach Meets Bessie: Milhaud and Gershwin Experiment with the Blues:' Many Jewish volunteers and con- tributors have been vital to the suc- cess of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in its 15-year history. Among them are Alan and Marianne Schwartz, Helen Rowin, Gwen Weiner, Sandi Reitelman and Raymond Rosenthal. Beverly Baker, recently honored as Israel Activist of the Year by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit, has been a mainstay of the festival. This year, Kendall is the recipient of the 2008 Beverly Franzblau Baker Young Artist Chair, while Sant'Ambrogio was awarded the Paul Katz Cello Chair in Sun.-Thurs. FF Total Bill memory of Morris Baker. The June 23 birthday concert is sponsored by Rayna Kogan in memory of her sister, internation- ally acclaimed pianist Ruth Laredo. Laredo, who died in 2005, was a huge supporter of the Great Lakes festival, Tocco wrote in a tribute to his long- time friend: "One of Ruth's most distinguishing characteristics — one that in fact we shared and talked about quite a bit — was a fierce sense of pride in being a Detroiter. "When the idea of the Great Lakes Festival took hold, I wanted it to be not just another music festival, but a celebration of our city and its culture. And I knew the first pianist I wanted to invite was Ruth Laredo" Each year until her death, Laredo performed at the festival, in solo recitals and chamber music, and gave master classes. "She lives on so strongly in me:' Kogan said. "I would go to concerts and form my opinion, and then I would call Ruthie and confer, compare our opinions. I still do it, in my mind, even today. "I wanted to keep her memory alive for the festival." ❑ (with ad only) 6/12/08 through 6/25/08 Business Hours: Mon-Sat 11:30am - 10:00pm Sunday 4:30 - 9:00pm 1 ei suspt samuery Lone Pine (17 InIti) air/14/ la 4/144r Banquets Bar/Bat Mitzvahs Reunions Anniversaries Birthdays etc. WE CATER AT MOST SYNAGOGUES, TEMPLES, HOTELS AND THE HALLS OF YOUR CHOICE le* ‘eee- 144, 7'9 le4e- JEWEL CLASSIC CUISINE Approved by Council of Orthodox Rabbis KOSHER CATERERS PHILIP TRIAL, food ir Beverage Director Z48-6614050 farmington Hills GOURMET SUNDAY BRUNCH TUESDAYS FREE ALL DAY EVERY WEDNESDAY ■ REE OMELETTES (20 to choose from FF , LUNCH OR 20% o APPETIZER TOTAL BILL DINNER $3.99 includes toast with Lunch or Dinner!
