THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

Reputation means everything in the restaurant game.

p

OTPOURRI
Having a respected name in
the restaurant business is many
times an assurance of confidence ... A
good reputation is usually high pride that
a family is careful to preserve in guarding
its honored title.
Celebrating its first anniversary,
very clean George's Coney Island in the
Newberry Square shopping center, north-
west corner of Haggerty and 14 Mile,
Commerce Township, owned by Tom
Teknos, carries on the fine family name ...
He is the nephew of George Dimopoulos,
who himself preserves the more than 70-
year Senate tradition at his own three local
locations.
Tom is no stranger to the northwest
area, formerly a much-requested waiter
at the one-time Big Daddy's Parthenon
in West Bloomfield ... His sister, Dena
Teknos, is a valued general manager at
Tom's 84-seat, top quality George's Coney
Island, open Monday-Sunday, 8 a.m. to 9
p.m.
MAIL DEPT. ... "I read with great
interest your article regarding restaurants
of the past in Southfield. Many I know,
some I didn't. I wonder if you remember
the 'Original' Broadway Market? When
I was a boy and my father would take
me to the office, we would have lunch at
Lefkofsky's with a tropical punch from
Kreger's Juice Bar. It didn't get much better
than that. That corned beef was kept in a
steam locker and knife sliced. Zukin's and
Boesky's followed that practice. Esquire
and Lou's started machine slicing, but still
were using the steam lockers.
"Well, they have all left Detroit and I
am still here. Local corned beef sand-

!AMER'S

wiches are an abomination and
I don't even try them anymore.
I long for the taste of a knife-
sliced, steam-heated corned
beef, pastrami or tongue sand-
wich. Does such a wondrous
deli still exist? I am willing
to travel 50 miles for it!" ...
Benjamin L. Smith, Jr.
(No, Ben, sorry to say that to
my knowledge there is noth-
ing even remotely like the
Broadway Market of yesteryears, located
at Broadway and Grand River in Detroit
... On almost any day during lunch, the
place was crowded with judges, unem-
ployed day workers, tycoons, cops, sports
figures, local personalities, shoppers, etc.,
from all walks of life ... Broadway Market
was very quick, especially if you were in
a hurry, and one couldn't get a much bet-
ter corned beef, pastrami, etc., sandwich
for less money in Detroit ... It was always
crowded but the turnover was so fast that
it took just minutes to eat.
One could be shoved and pushed by the
crowd around Kreger's beverage stand,
but if folks were fast they had little trouble
... Regulars at Broadway Market seemed
to be sharply divided into categories and
rarely spoke to each other ... One group
was composed of "do-it-yourselfers" ...
This faction purchased one of several vari-
eties of buns from Janet Burrows' bakeries
(she had three there) and then went to
Bruno's Delicatessen for roast beef or cold
cuts ... Their cost would run anywhere
from five to eight cents for the bun and
20 to 40 cents for the meat ... After slap-
ping on some mustard, they'd hot foot it
down to Kreger's, which sold about three

dozen kinds of drinks, rang-
ing from coffee and milk to a
creamed blueberry drink or
dozens of other fruit bever-
ages.
Another Broadway Market
faction staunchly clung to
Mrs. Harry Lefkofsky's deli-
catessen where, for a nominal
sum, you could get the best
corned beef sandwich in
the city, custom tailored by
expert sandwich makers ... If you were
the kind of person that thought ice cold
beer and corned beef sandwiches were the
thing, then Buck Isrow's little shop would
sell you a bottle ... He didn't even mind if
you got your sandwich elsewhere ... Buck
was the only one at Broadway Market that
sold beer.
All the dining and drinking was done
standing ... Wandering through the
bizarre and wonderful display counters
on the parquet floor was fit compensa-
tion, but even if one was not hungry, the
Broadway Market was well worth a visit
... No, there sure isn't anything like it
today.)
FREE GAS ... That's what folks
are getting at Vineyards Marketplace,
Northwestern Highway, between
Middlebelt and 14 Mile, Farmington
Hills ... One-gallon vouchers are given to
people with every two sandwiches from
Vineyards' Deli Basket menu, dine in or
carry out, mix or match (except trays) ...
The coupons have no expiration date, so
can be saved for partial or complete fill-up
if wanted or as many as people have gas
ducats for ... They can be redeemed only
at the BP station on Northwestern, north

of 12 Mile, Farmington Hills.
MAKING ROUNDS ... To Cafe Cortina,
10 Mile, east of Orchard Lake Road,
Farmington Hills, for marinated langous-
tines or European sea bass ... To Zoup,
in Franklin Plaza, Northwestern, north of
12, Southfield, for shrimp and crawfish
etouffe ... To Bonnie's Kitchen, Telegraph
and Maple, Bloomfield Township, for
salmon patties and salmon poached at the
restaurant.
