Chabad made its first appearance in
Michigan in 1930, when Rabbi Yosef
Yitschak Schneersohn spoke at the
Nusach H'Ari synagogue in Detroit.
The Detroit Free Press estimated that
more than 10,000 people greeted the

eminent Jewish leader at the train sta-
tion.
"I would say that at least 75 percent
of the Jewish people in the Detroit area
have some knowledge of Chabad, even
if they're not directly involved;' Stein
said.
For some at local businesses, a
Friday afternoon visit from Chabad
students is the local connection.
"We might share a Jewish thought or
give someone the opportunity to take
part in a custom, such as lighting can-
dles or reciting a blessing;' Stein said.
"Mostly we get to know the people."
Employees of the Beale Group in
Southfield have enjoyed these visits for
seven years.
"They have a great level of enthu-
siasm, and they discuss Judaism in
terms everyone can understand;' said
company president Jerry Beale. "They
try to explain and expose the beauty
of the religion and encourage people
to get involved in a non-judgmental
way"

Michigan when he first arrived with
his wife, Devorah, to serve as director
of Friendship House.
"I was impressed by the breadth
of services that Chabad-Lubavitch
provided — from a yeshivah my own
children could attend to programs
for children with special needs and
Jewish people who were struggling
with addiction:' Rabbi Pinson said. "My
work was made easier because of the
structure that was already in place; it
gave me instant credibility."
Stein estimates 40 percent of area
Jews, about 30,000, are involved with
Chabad in some way. Involvement
ranges from full-time Chabad-
Lubavitch practitioners to Jews who
take part in various Chabad-sponsored
programs, such as Friendship Circle's
annual Walk for Friendship.
