Dear
Bar ,
you
know, I've
begun to let go
of my old de-
structive eating
and food buying habits; however,
my family seems oddly resistant
to these changes. What's going on
here? Thanks, Gail (not real name).
A
nswer: Dear "Gail," what
you're experiencing is
not that uncommon. As
difficult as it is for individuals to
change themselves, it's sometimes
just as difficult for family and
friends to "let go" of the "old you"
that they're comfortable with.

Here are some action
steps that I would suggest:
• Share with your family
and friends what you're trying to
accomplish and how important
it is to you, i.e., get them to "buy
in" to what you're doing;
• Be "selfish"—have the will to do
what it takes to protect your new
goals and behaviors;
• When you encounter resistance,
point out to the resister how his
or her behavior is undermining
your efforts to accomplish your
goals—be nice, but firm;
Stick to your plans—good luck!
