Suzanne Chessler Special to the Jewish News Z ach Schnitzer has traveled to Michigan many times to see relatives, but his upcoming visit will link him with a much larger family, all sharing and celebrating religious heritage. Schnitzer, 24, who dances with the Chai Folk Ensemble based in Winnipeg, will appear with his troupe in a Jewish com- munity event that marks Israel's 60th anniversary. The program, planned by B'nai B'rith International Great Lakes Region, will begin 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Walled Lake Northern High School in Commerce, where a group of 32 dancers, singers and instrumentalists will perform traditional and modern Israeli choreography. "Chai members have a huge commit- ment because we love what we do',' says Schnitzer, who appears in every number except for one, which features only women members of the troupe. "I will be part of Bab-el Wab, a four- minute piece that has to do with the 1948 War of Independence. Bab-el Wab was a place through which supplies were brought into Jerusalem:" Schnitzer, as do the non-administra- tive members of the troupe, trains and performs as a volunteer. He joined in 2001 after being invited to audition by a Chai member who saw him dancing in a Canadian nightspot. He performed for a time, took a long hiatus because of other commitments and returned last January. "I had a sports background as a soccer player and was motivated to take classes at the Winnipeg School of Contemporary Dance says Schnitzer, a family counselor whose Michigan relatives include Bernard and Helen Morof of Southfield as well as Barbara Kessler and Richard Soble of Ann Arbor. "I'd been to Israel, but I'd never done Israeli dancing. I've come to spend 10 hours a week rehearsing and perform- ing with the troupe, and I've made many friends:' Tracy Kasner Greaves, managing artis- tic director of the ensemble, will join the program as a singer. With the troupe for 15 years, she also works as a cantor at Winnipeg's Congregation Etz Chayim. "Our program will be presented in two 45-minute segments, with an inter- mission:' explains Greaves, a University of Winnipeg theater and language arts graduate. "Watching our show is almost like a trip to see multicultural Jewish com- munities, with the costumes and the dif- ferent dances:' The production will use multimedia effects as the dances are presented. "We select our troupe members dur- ing open, public auditions," says Greaves. "Many musicians with Chai work as pro- fessional instrumentalists. We believe that having the live singers and musicians with the dancers makes for an extremely pow- erful experience Chai, which was started 44 years ago, has had its own studio for seven years. Launched by the late Sarah Sommer, the troupe has performers whose ages range between 15 and 38. ❑ The Chai Folk Ensemble performs 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the Performing Arts Center at Walled Lake Northern High School, 6000 Bogie Lake Road, in Commerce Township. The event will honor Arline Bittker of Orchard Lake with the B'nai B'rith Guardian of the Menorah Award and celebrate Israel's 60th. Tickets are $18, $36 and $100 with a special Patron Pre-Glow in Bittker's honor for $250. Please call (248) 646-3100 for more information.
