Author/Artist Jewish artist and novelist Jonathan Santlofer, the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts painting grants, began his writing career in 1989 after a gallery fire destroyed five years of his artwork. He now equally pursues both of his passions. Santlofer's initial literary efforts in suspense fiction resulted in his Kate McKinnon trilogy, in which McKinnon, a Catholic former homicide detec- tive married to wealthy Jewish lawyer Richard Rothstein, is drawn back to crime solving in the novels The Death Artist, Color Blind and The Killing Art. In his new series, debuting with Anatomy of Fear, Santlofer introduced NYPD sketch artist Nate Rodriguez, son of a Puerto Rican father and a Jewish social worker mother, and included more than 100 of his own original sketches. In his latest work of fiction, The Murder Notebook (William Morrow; $24.95), Santlofer brings back the bril- liant and possibly psychic Rodriguez, who has visions of two crimes — one ohn M. H Pr past, one present. Like its predecessor, The Murder Notebook combines liter- ary suspense with original drawings. Readers can meet the author as Santlofer presents The Murder Notebook 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at the Baldwin Public Library, 300 W. Merrill, in Birmingham, (248) 647- 1700; and 5 pm. Selling briskly since its January release is Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food. Pollan, 53, is a college journalism professor and the brother of actress Tracy Pollan; that makes him the broth- er-in-law of actor Michael J. Fox. The winner of many literary and science awards, Pollan was for- merly executive editor of Harper's magazine; he's Michael Pollan an expert on food and agricultural systems. In his new book, he proposes a new (and very old) answer to the question of what we should eat. It comes down to "seven simple but liberating words: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." He urges the return to the eating of well-grown, unprocessed food. Some Jewish ST INCLUDING D ISRAELI MUSIC I SUNDAY JUNE 22 2:30 P.M. Temple Israel 5720 Walnut Lake Rd.
