Robert Bartley: River
multi-media photo installation about the Clinton River
exhibitions presented by CHASE with sponsorship support from the following:
long, will speed through the water and compete for trophies. One prize goes to
the first boat that finishes the run, which begins below the Ambassador Bridge
and ends opposite Windsor's Dieppe Park in the vicinity of Bristol Bay. Other
prizes go to the tugs that finish first according to each horsepower class. The
races date back to 1949, although they were not held each year, and came to be
associated with the International Freedom Festival. Last year's race included 22
competitors. Tugrace.com .
COLORFUL 50TH The dazzling fireworks propelled Monday evening, June 23,
over the Detroit River mark the 50th anniversary of Detroit's pyrotechnic event,
the Target Fireworks. The traditional celebration of America's Independence
Day also serves as the finale for Detroit International River Days. The start of
the fireworks, choreographed to music by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale, is
set for 10:06 p.m., but there will be plenty for families to do before that magical
time, like "Rhythm and Rhymes from the Hart," which offers programs focused
on literacy and reading with lots of fun in the mix. Those providing financial sup-
port for the event can join a family VIP Rooftop Party filled with food, music
and activities just west of the Renaissance Center. The fireworks event is a little
earlier this year to accommodate travelers who want to get away for the holiday
weekend. For those shy about crowds, the 10,000 pyrotechnic effects can be
viewed on WDIV-Channel 4. (313) 923-7400; theparade.org .
WALK-IN MOVIES Free family films will be screened outdoors for Movie
Night on three Friday evenings in Shain Park in Birmingham. The films (titles
will be announced on the Web site as the dates get closer) start at 7:30 p.m. June
27, July 25 and Aug. 22. With families arriving during daylight, there should be
plenty of time to set up blankets or folding chairs and get comfortable before the
reels start moving. Popcorn and ice cream will be available for purchase, or bring
your own picnic fare — either prepared at home or bought at area restaurants,
where food will be packed to go. Kid-friendly activities, some tied to the indi-
vidual movies, also are being planned. (248) 433-3550; ci.birmingham.mi.us .
