Health & Fitness JCC Honors Leaders With Alterman Awards Israel Bonds Fetes Doctors The Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit has given recognition to two community lead- ers. The winners of this year's Susan Alterman Center Leadership Award are Maida Frank Portnoy and Susan Marwil, both of whom have lent their talents and given countless hours of volunteer time to lead Center initiatives. Maida Frank Portnoy of Bloomfield Hills has served the Jewish Federation Maida Frank of Metropolitan Detroit, notably its Portnoy educational program planning and as president of the Junior Division (now Young Adult Division). She won Federation's Boesky Award for Achievement. She has served on the boards of Jewish Family Service and the Anti- Defamation League and is now on the JCC board. Susan Marwil She was co-chair of this year's JCC Stephen Gottlieb Jewish MusicFest and is on the steer- ing committee of the Center's annual Jewish Book Fair as well as the advisory committee of the Lenore Marwil The Professional Health Services Division of State of Israel Bonds announces that the 2008 Maimonides Award recipients are Dr. Jack E. Belen and Dr. Carl B. Lauter. They will be honored 6 p.m. June 18 at a tribute dinner at Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills. Chairmen for the event, Drs. William Leuchter, Arthur Lieberman and Harris Mainster, have announced that the keynote speaker will be Israeli Television cone- Jack Belen spondent Gil Tamary. Dr. Belen serves on the board, is chief of medicine and director of medical edu- cation at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township. He is a clinical pro- fessor of medicine at Michigan State and Wayne State universities. Dr. Lauter is director allergy and clinical immunology and a clinical Carl Lauter professor of medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine. She sponsors an annual Institute for Retired Professionals spring lecture series and luncheon at the Center in memory of her mother, Edith S. Frank A Center board member for six years, Susan Marwil of Bloomfield Hills was inspired by her parents' community involvement. Her volunteerism includes serving the JCC, the Women's Division of the Jewish Federation board and advisory council; vice president of the National Council of Jewish Women/Greater Detroit Section; and with Congregation Shaarey Zedek of Oakland County, the chair of the PR committee for Women's World and a member of the sisterhood board. At the Center, Marwil served as chair and co-chair of the Lenore Marwil Jewish Film Festival as well as Seminars for Adult Jewish Enrichment (SAJE). She was the first chair of the Young Writers Workshop program. Established in 1988, the Center's Leadership Award was renamed in memory of Susan Alterman, an active member and Center leader who died in 1997. The Susan Alterman Leadership Award was endowed by her hus- band, Irwin, and son, Owen.
