nswer: Dear Jennifer,
Yes, you should still be
concerned—every parent
should remain properly vigilant
(but not obsessive) about their
child's weight status.

A recent article in the New York
Times did report that statistics
gathered between 1999 and 2006
by the Centers for Disease Con-
trol and Prevention (CDC)
show that the percentage
of overweight and obese
.-. , American schoolchildren
11'3/ I may have plateaued at
around 32% during that
, period. These are still
, troubling numbers, but
>, the trend lines may
/ give reason for hope.

No one is sure whether
the "lull" in the steady
climb in the overweight/
obesity rates is perma-
nent, or what the cause(s) might
be. One theory is that the rates
my have a hit a "natural plateau"
(perhaps due to a saturation of
the proportion of the population
who are genetically susceptible
to obesity). Another explanation
is that nutrition education and
school food/exercise programs
may finally be kicking in.

The bottom line: there's reason
for both optimism and vigilance.
