Region will honor com-
munity activists Ann and Leonard
P. Baruch at its 75th annual Balfour
Celebration in special recognition of
the 60th anniversary of the State of
Israel.
The couple will receive the Justice
Louis D. Brandeis Award, the ZONs
highest citation of merit, honor-
ing their lifetime commitment to
Zionism and Jewish education.
Ambassador John Bolton will be
featured speaker and Cantor Meir
Finkelstein of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek of Oakland County will pres-
ent a medley of Israeli songs. A
dessert afterglow will conclude the
evening. The program will be 7 p.m.

Leonard has been active in the
Detroit Jewish community for 70
years. In his professional career as a
librarian, he worked with the Detroit
Board of Education as a teacher,
librarian and administrator. He served
as president of the Southfield library
board and the Oakland County library
board.
At Shaarey Zedek, Leonard has
served as youth director, execu-
tive director, men's club president
as well as a trustee. He has served

"Conversations with Legislators and
Civic Leaders" breakfast briefing
sponsored by the Jewish Community
Relations Council on Thursday, June
17, at 8 a.m. at the Max M. Fisher
Federation Building in Bloomfield
Township.
Currently serving his fourth four-
year term as Oakland County execu-
tive, Patterson presides over a $769-
million annual budget and a county
workforce of nearly 4,000 full and

as executive secretary of Clover Hill
Park Cemetery in Birmingham and as
executive director emeritus of Shaarey
Zedek.
He and Ann owned and directed
Camp Petosega in northern Michigan
for 26 years. She taught in the Detroit
school system, but devoted 32 years of
her teaching career to Shaarey Zedek
Beth Hayeled Religious School. She
also assisted new Russian immigrants
by acting as interpreter to the medical
staff at Sinai Hospital of Detroit.
The couple created the Ann and
Leonard P. Baruch Tzedakah Fund
at Shaarey Zedek and the Ann and
Leonard P. Baruch Scholarship Fund
at the Frankel Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit. ❑
