How to Send Letters

We prefer letters relating to JN articles. We reserve the right to edit or reject letters. Letters of 225 words or less are considered first. Longer ones will
be subject to trimming. Letter writers are limited in frequency of publication. Letters must be original and contain the name, address and title of the
writer and a day phone number. Non-electronic copies must be hand signed. Send letters to the JN: 29200 Northwestern Highway, Suite 110, Southfield,
Ml 48034; fax (248) 304-8885; e-mail, letters@the jewishnews.com . We prefer e-mail.

Squandered Hope
If Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick really "held such promise"
and "offered real hope" of a "vision and intellect to change
the city for the better," as Robert Sklar once believed in his
Editor's Letter "A Dream Unfulfilled" (May 22, A6), it's in the
dustbin now. Kwame's grandiose vision of Detroit paralleled
President George W. Bush's vision of America in 2002, before
text messages and the Iraq War, before the huge increases
of gas and steel and food prices, before the housing market
crashed and foreclosures skyrocketed.
Now, George W. Bush can't get anyone to listen to him
("Failed Mission? May 22, A31). The Saudis won't increase
oil output, the Lebanese fully accept Hezbollah and peace
between Israel and the Palestinians is a faraway fantasy.
Meanwhile, Kwame is only worried about saving Kwame's job
and is fine with letting the city of Detroit continue to disintegrate.
There has never been a more urgent need for courageous
leaders with integrity. Instead, we get Bush and Kilpatrick, two
self-indulgent officials who are sacrificing their city and their
country for the good of themselves.
The promise of hope is squandered while we are left, hop-
ing that the next elected politicians aren't quite as dismal as
the current crop.

We're Not Silent
Regarding your Editor's Letter "The Palestinian Conspiracy"
(May 15, A6), I respectively have to disagree with Zionist
Organization of America National President Morton
Klein: American Jews are positively not as silent now as we
were during the Holocaust.
Unfortunately, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee
(AIPAC) did not exist during the Holocaust and the American
Congress did nothing to help save European Jewry. Now, we
have many Jewish organizations lobbying Congress.
The tragedy is that, according to a number of reports I
have read, only 18 percent of Jews nationwide support Israel
or Jewish causes. Thankfully, Detroit's numbers are much
higher because we are a very generous and active commu-
nity. Further, I was shocked beyond words when a recent poll
showed that around 46 percent of young Jews younger than
35 would not find it a tragedy if. God forbid, Israel ceased to

exist.
The Nazis, in the beginning, just wanted the Jews out of
Germany, but the world had its doors tightly shut. If Israel and
AIPAC would have existed during the Holocaust, perhaps mil-
lions of Jews could have been saved.
We must do everything in our power to encourage more
Jews to join pro-Israel organizations such as AIPAC and
StandWithUs, to support Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish
Campus Life and Jewish education, and to support the people
of Israel unconditionally to assure Israel will be safe for the
next 60 years and forever.

Bookstock Success
How pleased we are that the baby photo we found amongst
the many donated books at Bookstock has found its way
home ("Baby Photo Claimed," May 1, A8). We are sure that the
rightful owners are thrilled as well.
This year was a banner year for Bookstock, bringing in
more shoppers and sales than any other year. We congratulate
all participants on a job well done. We hope and believe that
this is a trend and that each successive year will see more vol-
unteers, more shoppers and more money for literacy and edu-
cation projects. We are thankful to the entire Jewish commu-
nity, without whom we could not run such a huge endeavor.
It takes 6-8 months, about 800 volunteers and thousands
of volunteer hours to make Bookstock run smoothly and effi-
ciently. Because of all of you who donated thousands of books
and media, sorted through the donations, purchased new
summer reads and media finds, and worked the sale floor, we
always had enough quality stock to have a tremendous year.
We thank our sponsors, Schostak Brothers & Co. Inc.,
CBL & Associates Properties Inc., and the Detroit Jewish
News. We are always grateful to Brandeis University National
Women's Committee/Detroit Chapter for its guidance in mak-
ing Bookstock the communitywide event it has become.
We will begin collecting books again in the fall. Thanks
again for being so generous this year ... and start saving for
next year now
